Kansas State started the 23rd season of Big 12 Conference action on Wednesday night at (25/rv) Iowa State. The Cyclones defended Hilton Coliseum with a 96-58 win. K-State has now lost seven straight Big 12 openers.
K-State was led by guards Kayla Goth and Jasauen Beard. Goth registered her second double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 assists. For the night, Goth was responsible for 17 of K-State’s 23 made field goals. This was her eighth career game with 10 or more assists. Beard came off the bench to contribute 12 points and four rebounds.
Kansas State (9-4, 0-1 Big 12) used a 13-2 run to secure a 13-8 lead with 4:39 remaining in the first quarter. K-State received seven of the 13 points from the bench, as Jasauen Beard tallied five and Ashley Ray a jumper.
K-State would end the opening stanza with a 22-19 lead, as they shot 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from the field with only three turnovers.
Iowa State (11-2, 1-0) used a 12-4 run to begin the second quarter and build a 31-26 lead with 5:52 remaining in the first half. The Cyclones continued to roll in the second quarter, building its lead to 14, 46-32, with 1:18 remaining following an Alexa Middleton layup. Iowa State outscored K-State in the second quarter, 27-12, to hold a 46-34 lead at the half. The 46 first half points were the most allowed by K-State this season in a first half.
The Wildcats aided Iowa State’s second quarter outburst with nine turnovers which resulted in 15 points off those turnovers.
Both teams were sloppy in the first five minutes of the third quarter, as the team combined for 12 points and nine turnovers with Iowa State holding a 53-39 lead with 4:57 remaining. Iowa State would eventually take control and increase its lead to 21, 65-44, entering the fourth quarter.
Iowa State raced to the finish line, knocking down six 3-pointers on the way to a 31-14 advantage in the final frame to build the final margin.
Kansas State ended the night shooting 40.0 percent from the field (24-of-60). Iowa State ended at 45.6 percent (36-of-79) which included a 16-of-33 effort from beyond the arc. The 96 points allowed by K-State on Wednesday were the most surrendered by K-State since November 23, 2015, at Connecticut.
Kansas State begins the home portion of its Big 12 schedule on Saturday night, as the Wildcats host Oklahoma at 7 p.m. Saturday’s game is K-State’s annual “Pack the House” game, as all tickets and select concession items are available for $1. At halftime of Saturday’s game, national act Red Panda will entertain the crowd.
