MANHATTAN — The Manhattan Fire Department is offering tips after a clothes dryer sparked a fire at a Manhattan home Tuesday afternoon.
Fire officials on Thursday corrected the loss estimate from the fire to $10,000 to the structure and $5,000 for the contents (A previous loss estimate released Wednesday noted a $60,000 property loss and $30,000 content loss estimate). The fire occurred at a two-story dwelling at 1114 Vattier Street. An investigation determined the fire was accidental due to a malfunction of the dryer. No injuries were reported.
The Fire Department reminds citizens to always clean the lint filter before or after each load of laundry. Other safety tips include:
* Remove lint that has collected around the drum.
* Rigid or flexible metal venting material should be used to maintain proper airflow.
* Make sure the exhaust pipe is not restricted and that the outdoor flap will open. Cleaning lint out of the vent pipe regularly is also recommended.
* Make sure the right plug and outlet are used. Installation should be done by a professional.
* Don’t overload your dryer and follow all manufacturer’s instructions.
* Turn off your dryer if you leave home or when you go to bed.

MANHATTAN — The Manhattan Fire Department made quick work of a house fire Tuesday afternoon just north of Aggieville.
Firefighters were dispatched shortly after 2 p.m. to 1114 Vattier Street. When they arrived there was no visible fire showing from the home. Upon entry fire was located in the dryer unit of the home which has separate rental units, according to the battalion chief. The fire was knocked down quickly and all occupants were able to exit the home safely. No injuries were reported.
Damage was noted Wednesday to be estimated at $60,000 to the property and $30,000 to the contents.
