From K-State
K-State pitcher Jordan Wicks adds to his historic freshman season as he was named a 2019 Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball, the publication announced Wednesday.
Wicks, the 2019 Big 12 Freshman of the Year, is the ninth Wildcat to be named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball and first since Will Brennan and Cameron Thompson did so in 2017. He is the fifth K-State pitcher to earn the honor from the publication.
Wicks became just the second Wildcat to be named Big 12 Freshman of the Year, joining pitcher Jake Matthys in 2013. In his initial campaign, Wicks posted a 6-3 record and led all Big 12 freshmen with a 3.61 earned run average while striking out 86 in 84 2/3 innings with just 26 walks allowed.
In addition to his Freshman of the Year honor, the lefty was an All-Big 12 Second Team selection and a unanimous Big 12 All-Freshman Team pick. A product of Conway, Arkansas, Wicks broke K-State’s single-season records in innings pitched and strikeouts by a freshman, which were both set by Andy Replogle back in 1973.
The 6-foot left-hander was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on April 15 after tossing a five-hit shutout at Texas to help secure the Cats’ first-ever shutout of the Longhorns and clinch a road series over a top-25 team for the second time ever.
The Wildcats ended their 2019 season with a 25-33 (8-16 Big 12) record and an appearance at the 2019 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship.
