RCPD warns of check cashing scam

    0
By KMAN Staff on July 10, 2019 Local News, Manhattan

Riley County Police are warning the public of a check cashing scam circulating in the area.

They say a woman going by the name of Naomi Scott is going around scamming people saying she’s moving from New York to Manhattan while pregnant and needs help getting appliances. She then sends a cashiers check for several thousands of dollars, promising the one who cashes is to keep $200 for their efforts, but the rest has to be sent back via Western Union. It takes a couple of days but the check bounces — leaving the victim out of thousands of dollars.

RCPD recommends the following precautions to ensure you don’t fall victim to a scam like this.

*Try to do transactions in person if possible

*Wait until checks process before doing any transactions

    *Safeguard your personal information

*Call police if you are suspicious

*NEVER send money without verifying the person receiving it is legitimate
