A second round of emergency furloughs was announced Friday by Kansas State University.
The furloughs impact 58 employees working within the College of Health and Human Sciences, the College of Veterinary Medicine and Parking Services and will occur in June and July. This follows an additional 349 furloughs announced earlier this month affecting Housing and Dining, Student Union, Recreational Services, the Child Development Center and Lafene Health Center.
“Many of those employees rely on the income that those facilities produce to cover their costs and their employee expenses. With no revenue coming you get to that point where we have to take these really unpleasant actions,” said K-State President Richard Myers, in an exclusive interview with KMAN Friday.
The emergency furloughs are a combination of full and partial furloughs. A partial furlough entails a reduction of hours. The first round was estimated to save $2 million for the university. The second round is estimated to save an additional $550,000. Myers said Friday the additional furloughs were necessary.
“Unfortunately the answer to that would be yes. The employees we furloughed were in operations that produced revenue that paid their salaries,” he said.
K-State’s Division of Human Capital Services is working with the affected employees on options for federal and state benefits.
