In this March 6, 2020, photo, a classroom is seen vacant through a window at Saint Raphael Academy in Pawtucket, R.I., as the school remains closed following a confirmed case of the coronavirus. As a growing number of schools around the country close their doors because of the new coronavirus, they are confronted with the dilemma of whether to move classes online and run the risk of leaving behind the many students who don't have internet or computers at home, or parents with flexible work schedule. Riley County’s rural school districts have approved reopening plans for the fall.

USD 378 Riley County Schools will have no change to the start of its calendar. The board voted unanimously Wednesday to keep the start date of Aug. 20. Superintendent Cliff Williams tells KMAN the district was fortunate that school was already backed up one week with the ongoing bond construction. Several days of in-service were added to the front of the school year to allow for staff training.

The USD 384 Blue Valley School Board voted Thursday morning to push its start date to Aug. 26.

Board Clerk Melody Pfaff tells KMAN the school year will start with the hybrid method of in person and remote learning if Riley County stays at a medium risk for COVID-19. Masks will also be worn in all PreK to 12th grade classes as per the governor’s executive order 20-59. The board will approve the entire calendar year during it’s Aug. 10 meeting.

Other area school start dates are as follows:

    USD 383 – Manhattan/Ogden – Aug. 26
    USD 475 – Geary County – Aug. 31
    USD 378 – Riley County – Aug. 20
    USD 384 – Blue Valley/Randolph –
USD 320 – Wamego – Sept. 2 (6th and 9th grade), Sept. 3 for other grades; PreK and K will start Sept. 8
    USD 323 – Rock Creek – Aug. 20
