Katie’s Way seeing success with alternative treatment option for veterans

Katie’s Way of Manhattan is just one of many local organizations that will benefit from generous giving during Giving Tuesday.

Resource and Development Coordinator Deanna Nitschke says about $5,000 was given during their first non-event event in October. They also raised nearly 80 percent of their goal during Wamego Community Foundation’s Match Day. She’s hoping that momentum carries into Giving Tuesday.

“You can go on our Facebook page and donate that way, you can go to katieswaymanhattan.com and donate that way,” she said.

Nitschke joined the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation Community Hour Monday along with retired Army Lt. Art DeGroat, who is the executive director for K-State Military and Veterans Affairs.

While the organization typically focuses on youth mental health, they’ve also branched out to assist military veterans with behavioral health concerns. DeGroat says Katie’s Way has been at the forefront of implementing a relatively new FDA approved alternative treatment for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder called Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (otherwise known as Deep TMS).

“We’ve discovered that a lot of our military people are treatment resistent to pharmaceutical treatments for these maladies. A lot of their treatment, even if moderately effective has a lot of implications on their readiness to serve,” he said.

That’s why he says alternative treatment is needed and now being provided through Katie’s Way. It allows them to get treated and also continue to serve while they’re getting better. The program, he says, is seeing profound success in clinical outcomes of improving the well-being and readiness of military personnel.
