Neta, a baby White Handed Gibbon that lives at the Sunset Zoo, celebrated her first birthday last weekend.

The Sunday celebration included brightly colored streamers, a baby swimming pool filled with colorful balls and a happy birthday sign.

For her birthday, Neta received a gift bag filled with an array of treats, including pieces of mango, pear and grapes.

She was also able to pose for a family photo with her sister, Tucker, her father, Dempsey, and her mother, Leslie.

Neta was born on April 25, 2020, meaning she came into the world during the pandemic and therefore has not been around many people.

According to Sunset Zoo primate keeper Rob Chase, she is fairly shy but will venture about an arms length from her mother. He says she will occasionally take a treat from his hand.

The gibbon family is currently “off-exhibit” due to the ongoing Expedition Asia construction, which is expected to be completed at the end of the year.

Neta is named after former exotic-animal intern Neta Ambar, who came from the K-State Veterinary School and loved the Gibbon family.

Ambar worked at the Gibbon Conservation Center in California and now works at the Milwaukee Zoo.
