Help wanted signs are popping up everywhere across the region including local government.

Assistant Pottawatomie County Administrator Officer Heather Gladbach says there are close to a dozen vacancies in the county offices, including six positions in public works.

The public works administrator position has been vacant since December when former administrator Peter Clark announced his resignation. Dustin Newman served in the role on an interim basis, before he resigned in May. Commission Chair Greg Riat says many of the applicants for the position have lacked the necessary hands-on experience the county is searching for.

Riat contends that even with the prolonged vacancy, it’s too early to consider increasing the salary offering for a public works administrator.

On its website, Pott County lists a salary range between $70,000 to $88,000. By comparison, neighboring Riley County is hiring for an assistant public works director with a salary range of $92,000 to $110,000 based on qualifications.

Pottawatomie County is also searching for a full time paramedic, a jailer recruit, a sprayer operator for Noxious Weed and a personal property clerk/field appraiser.

Commissioner Riat and Assistant County Administrator Gladbach were our guests Tuesday on KMAN’s In Focus. Listen to the full podcast here: In Focus 6/22/21: Pottawatomie County/Little Apple Pride
