Nearly 3 and a half months after it caught fire, Manhattan’s Taco John’s restaurant remains closed.

Manhattan Fire Department Fire Marshal Jake Powell gave a brief update on In Focus this week about the status of repairs at the store.

Fire investigators in late May determined the March 28 fire was accidental, caused by ignited cooking oil on soiled towels in a storage area.

Manhattan inspectors also this week issued a $13.2 million permit to Stormont Vail Healthcare for its new medical complex, on the east edge of the K-State campus.

Powell says the city’s Risk Reduction team has approved plans for the nearly 74,000 square foot facility which will sit at 1325 Research Park Drive near the Kansas Department of Agriculture building.

Officials broke ground on the facility, a joint endeavor between Stormont Vail and the university, in mid-June. Manhattan Chamber officials say the company is investing 38 million dollars in construction and equipment costs.

Powell also says a building permit for the new Casey’s at 3rd and Fort Riley Blvd. is still pending.

Earlier this year it was announced Casey’s is interested also in a second Manhattan location, but details haven’t been shared publicly from city officials.
