4:30 p.m. Saturday update
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is leading an investigation into an early Saturday morning homicide in Aggieville, that also led to an officer firing a shot at the alleged homicide suspect.
A preliminary investigation suggests the two men, both from Fort Riley, were at an Aggieville bar. Later as the two men were gathered outside in separate groups of friends, witnesses told KBI that the two got into a verbal altercation, with one pulling a gun on the other.
The shooting victim, 21-year-old Joshua Wardi, died at the scene. The shooting suspect, 19-year-old Tremelle Montgomery, fled the scene and was chased by two RCPD officers, one of which fired two rounds at Montgomery’s legs, striking him and causing him to stop. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
Montgomery was transported to Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, and later to a Topeka hospital. Authorities say he’s in fair and stable condition.
KBI is asking anyone who witnessed either shooting to call the KBI at 1-800-KS-CRIME. Tips can also be submitted online at kbi.ks.gov/sar.
KBI says it will conduct a thorough and independent investigation and is being assisted by the Fort Riley Police Department and the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID). Once completed, the findings will be turned over to the Riley County Attorney for review.
The investigation is ongoing.
Saturday’s shooting is the second such incident in Aggieville in less than two months. A shooting inside Tate’s on Dec. 12, left a K-State football player injured.
