KBI investigating officer-involved shooting in Junction City

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has opened an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred Saturday evening in Junction City.

Preliminary information released by KBI indicated a woman reported a man outside her home, waving a handgun and threatening she and another woman shortly after 5 p.m. in the 700 block of West 11th Street. Officers from the Junction City Police Department responded to the area along with KBI agents and the Crime Scene Response Team.

As officers arrived, a man matching the suspect’s description was seen fleeing the area with a gun, and he was chased on foot. During the chase, KBI says officers heard gunshots and observed him pointing the gun at them. A confrontation ensued,  with one officer firing at the man, striking him multiple times.

Officers rendered aid to the man, identified as 36-year-old Carlton Solton, of Junction City. He was transported to Geary Community Hospital and later flown to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka for treatment of injuries. As of Sunday, KBI reported Solton had undergone surgery and was recovering in the intensive care unit.

No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

KBI is conducting an independent investigation and will turn over the findings to the Geary County Attorney for review.

    Additional details are pending.
