Today marks Election Day in Kansas.
Advance voting ended at noon Monday, with 2,183 Riley County residents casting their ballots early. That’s down about 1,000 from the last city/school board election in 2021, which saw 3,185 residents vote in advance. Advance ballots by mail will be accepted through Friday as long as they are postmarked by today.
Riley County Clerk Rich Vargo reflected Monday on the election cycle, which has included new equipment and more security measures surrounding the voting process.
With new laws regarding Election Security taking effect this year coupled with the new equipment needed to comply, the County Clerk’s office has become a bit more congested, and a solution appears to be on the horizon, according to Vargo.
Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Locally, Manhattan voters are selecting four candidates to serve on the Manhattan City Commission and USD 383 school board. Elsewhere across the county, there are four vacancies on the Riley County and Blue Valley school boards.
Leonardville, Ogden, Randolph and Riley are all holding mayoral elections. Ogden and Randolph have five council seats on their ballots, while Leonardville votes for three, and Riley for two council seats.
In Pottawatomie County, there are five vacancies on the Wamego School Board and four seats open for the Rock Creek School Board. Wamego and Westmoreland both have single seats open for their city councils. St. George residents are voting for mayor and one vacant council seat.
