More snow fell in Manhattan Saturday over a period of 18 hours than what was recorded all of last winter.

According to Kansas Mesonet, Manhattan recorded 6 inches of snow, doubling last year’s entire snowfall total of 3.2 inches. It also ended the city’s 7th longest streak of 6 inches or less at 1,396 days (Jan. 30, 2020).

The official Manhattan snow total is 6″! Nearly DOUBLE last year’s entire winter! This also ends the 7th longest streak of 6″ or less at 1396 days, or since 1/30/20. Measured 0.59″ of liquid. #kswx pic.twitter.com/9Js5eMCSEJ

According to the National Weather Service, snowfall amounts generally ranged between 5 and 8 inches across the region. Just northwest of Manhattan, Riley County Emergency Management recorded 6.8 inches of snow while Onaga saw 5.3 inches, Wamego saw 5 inches and Grandview Plaza saw 6 inches of snow.

Emergency officials were kept busy Saturday. The Riley County Police Department responded to dozens of calls reporting vehicle crashes, motorist assist and disabled vehicles. Further details will be available in Monday morning’s RCPD activity report. The Kansas Highway Patrol also responded to a number of wrecks along Interstate 70 as a result of conditions.
