The 2024 election cycle is ramping up and already four local residents have filed for seats on the Pottawatomie County Commission this fall.
The board will expand from three to five seats in 2025, after voters approved as much in the 2022 election cycle. Candidates in the two new districts, 4 and 5, will be elected to two year terms, then will be up for a four year term in 2027, along with the district 1 seat, which is currently held by Dee McKee.
As of Wednesday, four candidates have filed, including incumbent Greg Riat for the third district. The former Sheriff will be challenged by Bill Drew of St. Marys.
Former County Clerk Nancy McCarter, of Wamego, has filed for the second district seat, held by Pat Weixelman, who has stated he will not be seeking re-election.
Armon Bosse, of Onaga, is the lone candidate in the fifth district, which encompasses the largely rural northern two-thirds of the county.
There are currently no filings for the fourth district which encompasses the City of St. George and the surrounding Township.
Pottawatomie County will also elect a new sheriff in 2024. Two have filed for that race, including current Undersheriff Doug Adams, of Manhattan, and St. Marys Police Chief Derek Cid.
Elsewhere, Lisa Wright and Betty Jo Abitz have filed for re-election as treasurer and register of deeds, respectively.
The filing deadline is June 1. The primary election is Aug. 6. The general election is Nov. 5.
