RCPD introduces HERT incident response vehicle

0
By KMAN Staff on January 1, 2025 Local News, Manhattan, Riley County

The RCPD proudly announces the addition of the HERT Incident Response Vehicle to its fleet. This cutting-edge F550 vehicle, tailored to the unique needs of the Hazardous Evidence Recovery Team (HERT), represents a significant leap in operational capability. This achievement was made possible through federal appropriations secured with the support of Senator Jerry Moran.

A Long-Term Vision Realized

Planning for this advanced vehicle began in 2016, with the design phase and funding efforts officially launching in 2019. After years of dedication, RCPD secured federal funding in 2022, thanks to Senator Moran’s unwavering advocacy for law enforcement initiatives.

State-of-the-Art Features

The HERT Incident Response Vehicle is designed to support diverse operations, from hazardous evidence recovery to serving as a negotiation or command post. Key features include:

  • Generator: Provides continuous power for over 24 hours to ensure uninterrupted operations.
  • IT Hub: Integrates advanced communication and data management systems.
  • Onboard Facilities: Includes a restroom and kitchenette for extended deployments.
  • Fume Hood: Enables the safe handling and containment of hazardous materials.
  • Evidence Passthrough Door: Streamlines the secure transfer of evidence.
  • Flood Lights: Ensures optimal visibility in nighttime or low-light scenarios.

Funding Without Local Tax Impact

The acquisition of the HERT vehicle was achieved through federal appropriations, allowing RCPD to enhance public safety without burdening local taxpayers. Federal funds are allocated from the national budget for critical projects like this, reinforcing public safety initiatives.

Acknowledgment and Gratitude

RCPD extends sincere gratitude to Senator Jerry Moran for his instrumental role in securing the necessary funding. His dedication to supporting law enforcement has been pivotal in bringing this project to fruition.

Strengthening Community Safety

This new addition significantly enhances RCPD’s readiness to handle complex incidents, ensuring the safety of both personnel and the community. The HERT Incident Response Vehicle underscores the department’s commitment to:

  • Long-term strategic planning.
  • Leveraging partnerships for innovative solutions.
  • Prioritizing public safety while preserving local financial resources.

As RCPD continues to evolve, the introduction of the HERT Incident Response Vehicle marks a milestone in the department’s mission to serve and protect the community more effectively.
