Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly announced Monday that Michelin will invest more than 100 million dollars in the Junction City facility over the next five years. Kelly said, “Michelin’s expansion is further proof that the work we are doing to recruit, retain, and expand businesses is the state is paying off. Now, 200 more Kansans will have quality jobs and Junction City will continue to grow, benefiting the state as a whole.” This investment will increase Michelin’s production capacity of Camso rubber tracks. Wamego Community Care Ministries celebrated their 20th anniversary Friday with a bench dedication to their founders. Community Health Ministry was the original name of the organization founded by Rosemary Helms, Lorena Carlson, and Elizabeth Hesse in 2001. Helms gave a brief history of the earliest days of Community Health Minstries. In 2019, Community Health Ministries renamed themselves to Community Care Ministries. Over time, their services have expanded. The bench dedication was attended by the two living founders Helms and Carlson, as well as their families.
Evergy Representatives met with the Riley County and Manhattan City Commissions during a joint meeting Thursday to discuss implementation of new lines and substations to handle the rapidly expanding areas in Riley and Pottawatomie Counties. Mark Freel and Aaron Spreer were the Evergy representatives who met with the Commission. Aaron Spreer gave the presentation. Spreer says the intended goal is to reinforce existing power delivery, and revealed proposals. Flag Day was celebrated Wednesday in Manhattan, as Boy Scouts from Troop 74 commemorated the holiday with the annual flag raising ceremony at City Hall. Event organizer Stormy Kennedy spoke to KMAN about the local history of the event, and her involvement in the City Hall kiosks about the 101 US Army Division – as well as the importance of the event. Troop 74 is led by Eric Boudraeux. Eisenhower Middle School Band Director Scott Freeby played Reveille as well as To the Colors, both songs associated with the US Flag. Sunset Zoo is celebrating the 69th Birthday of the oldest chimpanzee in human care. Susie is celebrating her 69th birthday on Monday, June 12th. Susie is the oldest living chimpanzee in human care on the planet. Susie came to Sunset Zoo in 1974. Most chimpanzees live to an average of 40 years old, making Susie even more unique. The chimpanzee troop at Sunset Zoo are between 10 and 44 years old, and all view Susie as the Matriarch.
