KANSAS CITY — A 20-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, man was sentenced to just over four years in federal prison for stealing 14 guns from a pawn shop. U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said in a news release that Angel Mora was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty to stealing guns from a licensed firearms dealer. Authorities said Mora and accomplices broke into Joe’s Pawn and Gun in Kansas City, Kansas, and stole seven rifles, five shotguns and two handguns. Mora fled when officers arrived during the burglary. Investigators found him hiding along a creek bed and arrested him.

KANSAS CITY — A 22-year-old man has pleaded guilty to killing a Kansas City, Kansas, police captain in 2016. Jamaal Lewis was scheduled to go to trial on Nov. 5 but pleaded guilty Thursday to first-degree felony murder in the shooting death of 46-year-old Capt. Robert Melton. The Kansas City Star reports Lewis was originally charged with capital murder after Melton was shot in July 2016. TOPEKA — An 82-year-old woman whose car accidentally crashed into a Topeka cafe, causing the death of a customer, will not face charges. Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay said Thursday charges won’t be filed against Peggy Turner, of Topeka. He said an investigation into the July 26 crash at Banjo’s Cafe found no evidence of criminal conduct. Shawnee County Sheriff’s officials said Turner was parking at the cafe when she unintentionally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake. KANSAS CITY — A federal judge says a videotaped deposition of Secretary of State Kris Kobach won’t be released to the public. The Kansas City Star reports Judge Julie Robinson’s ruling on Thursday prevents the American Civil Liberties Union from releasing the tape. The deposition includes details about Kobach’s private talks with President Donald Trump and members of Congress. A transcript of the video is public. The Kansas Attorney General announced $77,000 in state grants for a couple Manhattan organizations Wednesday. Sunflower CASA will receive nearly $30,000. $20,000 of that is to help them provide supervised visitation to children who have been removed from their parents’ homes. $9,250 will help fund advocates for children going through the court system. The Riley County Police Department said in a release that a traffic collision in Northern Riley County Thursday morning involved a Fort Riley military vehicle. The military vehicle and a civilian pick-up truck collided head on at approximately 6:40 a.m. east of Riley on the 9500 block of Madison Road. Highway 24 just west of Highway 77 junction shut down for an hour as a result. The driver of the pick-up was transported by Riley County EMS to Via Christi Hospital. Mold was discovered in more than a dozen dorm rooms in Ford Hall at Kansas State University Wednesday. Maintenance crews will be going room-to-room inspecting every dorm room for the presence of mold. The mold that was found was reportedly inactive and not growing. The inspections will start on the top floor and work down to the bottom. Maintenance workers will also be examining dorm air conditioning units and pipes. PRAIRIE VILLAGE — Parole has been denied for a school janitor who subdued a 13-year-old girl with chloroform more than 40 years ago as she walked home from a suburban Kansas City pool and then killed her.
