A suspect who had escaped custody from the Riley County Police Department has been apprehended. 33 year old Cory Calkins, of Manhattan, was taken into custody around 4:30 pm on Thursday. Calkins escaped from RCPD custody on November 2 after being apprehended. He was arrested on probable cause offenses of aggravated burglary, possession of meth, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Calkins is being booked on those offenses along with aggravated escape from custody, interference with LEO, and theft. The offenses are from 3 separate cases. WESTMORELAND, Kan. — Just weeks after Pottawatomie County Commissioner Travis Altenhofen announced his resignation, the Pottawatomie County Republican Party has chosen Pottawatomie County Sheriff Greg Riat as his successor. The decision, which will be finalized upon approval from Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, came during a meeting Thursday in which precinct leaders from district three of Pottawatomie County chose Riat from a pool of four candidates with a majority vote. Manhattan Area Technical College has been named one of the top 150 two-year public colleges in the country by The Aspen Institute. The honor is part of The Aspen Institute College Excellence Program that chose the top 15 percent out of about 1,000 two-year public colleges that applied. Selection of institutions is based on completion rates, employment rates, learning, earnings and equity. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Time is running out to begin construction on a new coal-fired power plant in Kansas before its permit lapses. The battle over the plant has lasted more than a decade. By the time the Kansas Supreme Court cleared the way for construction in 2017, a company involved in it called the chances it would be built “remote.” But The Kansas City Star and Wichita Eagle report that documents they obtained show the utility spearheading the project told regulators that “significant interest” remains in building the plant. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Authorities say a teenager was shot and killed at a Wichita park during an ongoing social media dispute. Police Capt. Brent Allred said 15-year-old Marion Wheaton was shot Wednesday night as he and two other teenagers walked to the park to a fight. Allred said the dispute was between them and another 15-year-old boy. The Wichita Eagle reports Allred said when that boy arrived at the park with others in a car, one person from the car fired several shots, hitting Wheaton. He died later at a hospital. The cost of the Manhattan Conference Center expansion has risen from originally planned, but city commissioners Tuesday approved a contract amendment to avoid impacting property taxes. The city agreed to a $3.5 million, 14,000 square foot expansion in January of 2019, but HCW-Manhattan LLC says demand on subcontractors in the region due to various ongoing projects including NBAF increased the costs to a $4.99 million price tag.
