The Boys & Girls Club of Manhattan has been awarded a prize package of $25,000 in technology upgrades. The package includes state-of-the-art computers, software as well as 12 months of tech support. The award was part of a contest organized by Twin Valley, a telecommunications and IT company serving small towns and rural communities. TOPEKA — Kansas welfare officials have barred a group home operator’s employee who is accused of sexual misconduct from working in locations where children are present. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that Kansas Department for Children and Families spokeswoman Taylor Forrest says the agency was disappointed that The Villages declined a recommendation to fire the worker. Welfare officials announced the new employment conditions for him last month. HANSTON — Authorities say a man whose body was found in a southwest Kansas field lived in Colorado. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says the case is being investigated as a homicide. The victim was 21-year-old Bayron Diaz-Bautista from the Fort Collins, Colorado area. A farmer reported finding the body in a field Monday night southwest of Hanston in Hodgeman County. Autopsy results have not been released.

A man is in custody after the Riley County Police Department sent a text alert to residents Tuesday morning around 8 a.m. warning people to stay away from the 800 block of Colorado Street. The Kansas Board of Regents released the latest enrollment numbers for state universities. Overall, Kansas State University saw a decline of 574 students. President Richard Myers reported during his state of the university address last Friday that K-State has been declining from their 20-year peak in 2014, when the university had an enrollment of 24,766 students. In 2017, that number was 22,795 students and this year there are about 22,221 students enrolled. TOPEKA — The Kansas Board of Regents reports that public colleges and universities reported an overall decline in enrollment in the current fall semester. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that the regents this year used a new system called full-time equivalency, rather than doing the traditional head count. Full-time equivalency converts credit hours using a formula that the average full-time undergraduate student takes 15 hours a semester, and the average graduate student takes 12 hours. WICHITA — The man accused of making a hoax phone call that led police to fatally shoot a Wichita man has been arraigned on a new indictment. Tyler Barriss, of California, was arraigned Monday on a superseding indictment accusing him of making false/hoax reports to emergency services, cyberstalking, making interstate threats, wire fraud and conspiracy. OTTAWA — The Kansas Highway Patrol reports two children were killed and four others were injured in a two-vehicle crash. The crash was reported Monday night five miles east of Ottawa. The accident killed 11-year-old Briana Sobba and 3-year-old Becham Klemen, both of Wellsville. The patrol says a Ford they were in failed to yield the right of way and was struck by another vehicle.
