With the flu season coming up, Pottawatomie County Health Department director Lisa Kenworthy’s update to the county commission could not have come at a better time. The League of Women Voters will be hosting an election forum at the Manhattan Public Library this Sunday for candidates running for the Manhattan City Commission and the USD 383 Manhattan/Ogden Board of Education. The city-commission candidates’ forum will be from 1:30 to 3:30 PM and the school-board candidates’ forum will be from 3:45 to 5 PM. Riley County commissioners have approved an upcoming public hearing for a sewer benefit district in Keats. Deputy County Counselor Craig Cox brought a petition from some of the residents of Keats requesting the sewer district. The petition was signed by about 0.54 acreage, which rounded to about 55% of the residents. State statutes say a petition must be signed by over 50%. Cox says the next step is to schedule a public hearing where the commissioners will consider the petition and decide whether or not to create the district.  He added statutes state they need to have the notice published…

Enrollment at Kansas State University has dropped for the 5th year in a row. During the Kansas State, State of the University Address, President Richard Myers addressed this problem. “We have revamped our scholarship and tuition strategies to reach new markets. Particularly those out of state”. he said Friday. A total of $250,000 is going toward strategic planning. “My guess is that in this 1st year as were still trying to recover from enrollment decline. INDEPENDENCE, Kan. (AP) — Officials at a southeast Kansas zoo say a cougar that got out of its enclosure has been recaptured. The cougar got loose Monday morning at Riverside Park and Ralph Mitchell Zoo in Independence. City officials said later Monday the animal was captured and it had not left the zoo. Zoo officials had issued a statement before the capture warning residents to be cautious while the search was underway. Further details were not released. Independence is about 113 miles (181.85 kilometers) southeast of Wichita.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly has opened a review of options for expanding Medicaid in Kansas with warnings against work requirements and a limited expansion. Kelly gave opening remarks Monday at the first meeting of a council she appointed to provide the Republican-controlled Legislature with policy guidance ahead of next year’s expected debate on the issue. Kelly said she wants the council to develop “guiding principles” for lawmakers. She described work requirements and a limited Medicaid expansion as ideas that haven’t worked well in other states. Runners from all age groups showed their support for Shepherds Crossing on Saturday with the 8th annual C. Clyde Run. Taking place at the K-State Student Union’s Bosco Plaza, hundreds of runners and walkers gathered to show their support.  Coordinator and Assistant to the Dean of the College of Business Melanie Horton says they usually average around 300 runners for the event, but saw around 350 this year. “We have runners from all ages, 80s to babies in strollers.  It’s a real family event,” says Horton.
