KANSAS CITY — A nationwide shortage of truckers has some industry officials and national lawmakers supporting a plan to allow 18-year-olds to become long-haul drivers. But some industry officials, like Jeffrey Steinberg, director of the APEX CDL Institute in Kansas City, Kansas, thinks that’s a bad idea, even though the institute trains truckers and would likely see an increase in enrollment. WICHITA — Authorities say a Kansas sheriff’s deputy and a suspect were killed during a fight that broke out as the suspect was being arrested. The Wichita Eagle reports that Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter says Deputy Robert Kunze was shot Sunday about 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of downtown Wichita after responding to a call about a suspicious person. Easter says Kunze patted down the suspect’s waistband and found a 40-caliber handgun. Kunze was handcuffing the suspect when the fight began. ATCHINSON — Atchison County authorities say a Missouri teenager has died and another teenager from Texas is in critical condition after a car they were in went into a creek in northeast Kansas during the weekend. Three other teens were able to escape without serious injury. Undersheriff Toby Smith said 16-year-old Zachary Armontrout, of Rushville, Missouri, died Monday at a Kansas City hospital. Sixteen-year-old Regan Moger, of Houston, Texas, remains in critical condition. Captain Jeff Hooper of the Riley County Police Department will be the new chief of police in Hutchinson starting October 22nd. The 27-year veteran of the RCPD was announced last week to be one of the four finalists to replace the retiring RCPD Director Brad Schoen, but is now withdrawing his candidacy. Hooper will replace Hutchinson Chief Dick Heitschmidt. Heitschmidt served as chief for 26 years before retiring today. According to the Hutchinson News, Hutchinson City Manager John Deardoff offered Hooper the position after seeing that he was the only internal officer still in the running in the RCPD Director search.

Manhattan, Kan. – K-State finally got some breathing room on Saturday and weren’t forced to play catch up. K-State led the whole way in the afternoon matchup with the UT San Antonio Roadrunners.
