TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Letters containing suspicious white powder have been sent to lawmakers and other public officials across Kansas, officials announced Friday. No injuries have been reported, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. It had counted more than 30 letters as of late Friday afternoon. The news release didn’t provide details about the consistency of the white powder. In emails sent to legislators and obtained by The Topeka Capital-Journal, Tom Day, director of Legislative Administrative Services, said the Kansas Highway Patrol had informed his office of the letters, which contain a return address of either Kansas City or Topeka.…

Ryan Larson, 21, of Manhattan was arrested on June 15, 2023, around 4:30 p.m. on his Pottawatomie County District Court warrant for rape and aggravated indecent liberties with a child. Larson was transported to the Pottawatomie County Jail. The Manhattan Juneteenth Committee kicked off their three-day-long Juneteenth celebrations Thursday with their annual art auction at the Douglas Activity Center. Committee Member Zelia Wiley said Juneteenth serves as a celebration of freedom and as a way to recognize and celebrate the experiences of the African American community. For Committee Member Betti O, Juneteenth represents uniting people and creating togetherness. RCPD reported that 54 year old Jose Torres was arrested following an accident near the intersection of East Marlatt Ave and Brookepointe Circle in Manhattan in March. Torres was arrested on the charges of Aggravated Battery, Open Container, Failure to stop at an accident, passing with insufficient clearance, and driving with no license. These charges stem from the accident that took place on March 24th. The Kansas Board of Regents approved a 5% tuition increase for Kansas State University during their Wednesday meeting. This decision marks the highest rate increase since 2019 at K-State and the five other public universities in Kansas. During last month’s meeting, officials from each university proposed 5 to 7 percent increases for the coming school year. K-State, the University of Kansas, Emporia State University and Pittsburgh State University will all experience the 5% jump. HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas doctor saved his daughter when she became trapped by their overturned raft in a rushing Colorado river, but was unable to save himself. Dustin Harker, 47, a neurologist from Hutchinson, was on a whitewater rafting trip Friday with friends from church and four of his 13 children when the accident happened in the Sunshine Falls area on the Arkansas River.
