WICHITA — An Ohio professor alleges in a lawsuit that Wichita State University retracted an employment offer after she told them she was pregnant. The Wichita Eagle reports that Evangeline Heiliger says that she revealed her pregnancy for the first time and asked about childcare in March when she was offered a tenure-track job as the assistant professor of women’s studies. The suit says a dean told her the next day in an email that he “had become aware that she was no longer available for the position” and was removing her from consideration. WICHITA — Kansas Sen. Jerry Moran says he wants the shutdown to come to end, saying it will soon start to affect farmers and aircraft manufacturers. The Wichita Eagle reports that Moran said Friday after touring three Wichita businesses that he’s “sorry” the government is in a shutdown. The Riley County Appraiser’s Office presented the 2019 agricultural land use values to the Riley County Commission at the board’s meeting Thursday. Appraiser Greg McHenry told the commission that values are set to increase again this year, despite a sluggish agricultural economy. He says the state of the economy has some people wondering why that’s the case. McHenry says the advantage to the this setup is that it spreads out the major peaks in values that can occur and minimizes the valleys. More than 1,000 Kansas students will receive $2.1 million in student loan forgiveness under the terms of a settlement reached Thursday, Jan. 3, with the Career Education Corporation (CEC), Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said in a statement. CEC is a for-profit education company based in Illinois that currently offers primarily online courses through American InterContinental University and Colorado Technical University.
