(Press release) The Riley County Police Department, in conjunction with Pawnee Mental Health Services, is proud to announce the creation of the mental health co-responder position. The co-responder works for Pawnee, but is assigned full-time with RCPD to provide help with crises services. Jessica Blasi has been tapped for the position, and sees the role as an opportunity to help those most in need. “The goal is to reduce the rate of arrests for those dealing with mental health challenges,” Jessica said. The Junction City Fire Department responded to a reported residential structure fire at 2706 Oakwood Drive early Thursday morning. The 2:21 a.m. fire was at the rear of the structure with a propane bottle on the deck and all occupants out of the house. First units on scene advised a working structure fire at the rear of the residence. JCFD units extinguished the fire in the rear of the structure with a quick fire attack. Kansas State University students have elected Jack Ayres, junior in chemical engineering, Overland Park, as student body president. His running mate, Olivia Baalman, junior in computer science, Wichita, will serve as student body vice president. Ayres and Baalman will take office on April 7, when they will begin to advocate for the three themes of their campaign: “Your Degree, Your Campus, Your Voice.” Ayres is currently speaker of the student senate for the Student Governing Association, or SGA, serving previously as its vice chair of student engagement and chair of the Special Committee on Membership. The Indians, in their first 6A state tournament appearance since 2010, fell 51-44 in Wichita’s Koch Arena. MHS, the No. 2 seed in the bracket, struggled out of the gate. PITTSBURG — The state’s newest casino and hotel complex is getting closer to opening. Officials with the Kansas Crossing Casino + Hotel say the $80 million facility near Pittsburg will have its grand opening April 8. The first day will include opening the casino floor and two restaurants, as well as the first concert at The Corral, the indoor entertainment venue. The act for that concert has not yet been announced. The development that will feature more than 625 slot machines, 16 gaming tables, a 123-room Hampton Inn and Suites and entertainment complex. TOPEKA — Kansas legislators have killed a bill containing Republican Gov. Sam Brownback’s proposals to raise tobacco and liquor taxes to help fix the state’s serious budget problems. The GOP-controlled state Senate voted 37-1 to kill the bill Tuesday. Senate President Susan Wagle and other top Republicans had predicted there would be little support for Brownback’s proposals. Lawmakers so far are focusing on closing projected budget shortfalls totaling more than $1 billion through June 2019 by rolling back past income tax cuts championed by Brownback. New estimates indicate Kansas wildfires have burned more than 1,000 square miles, up from 625 square miles. The Manhattan Fire Department and Riley County Fire District No. 1 sent crews to assist with the fires near Hutchinson Monday and Tuesday. The Kansas Division of Emergency Management said late Tuesday that the heaviest damage is in Clark County, where 548 square miles have burned. That fire started in Oklahoma before moving into the Kansas ranching community. Another 235 square miles have burned in neighboring Comanche County, Kansas.
