TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The Kansas Supreme Court will hear arguments this month in the appeal of a death row inmate convicted of killing members of his family. The state Office of Judicial Administration said Wednesday in a release the state Supreme Court will hear arguments for James Kraig Kahler’s case on Dec. 16. Attorneys for Kahler and the state will each have an hour to argue their sides, and the proceedings will also be broadcast online. ANDOVER, Kan. (AP) A middle school in southern Kansas is stepping up security after authorities found a written bomb threat in a bathroom. The Wichita Eagle reports that Andover Middle School will have extra security Thursday after a threat was discovered written on a toilet paper dispenser in a school bathroom. Andover public schools spokeswoman Nicole Gibbs says the threat found Wednesday referenced a potential incident Thursday. She says the school takes such threats seriously. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A Lawrence attorney nominated to the federal bench in Kansas nearly a year ago is withdrawing his name from consideration. Terrence J. Campbell made public on Wednesday letters he sent to President Barack Obama and to Sens. Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran. He cites the short time remaining for Congress to complete its business and the results of the recent election, saying it is apparent he will not be able to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate. After an hour and a half of commentary and deliberation, a motion was adopted to create a committee at the beginning of the new year. A Kansas Department of Corrections inmate serving time for nearly 25 years on Geary County charges of first degree murder and kidnapping has apparently been passed over for parole.  Jason Turner, 46, had been up for consideration with September public comment sessions, but KDOC indicates on its website just this past week he’s now not eligible for release until 2021. Turner was sentenced in 1992 in connection with murder and kidnapping cases in September of 1991. He has been held at Ellsworth Correctional Facility since 2006.

A few arrests of note Tuesday with the Junction City Police Department. A Junction City man, Daniel Pettigrew, 33, was arrested on a variety of charges including aggravated battery, rape, and kidnapping.  Pettigrew was arrested at the Junction City Police Department. Natasha Cliff, 30, of Junction City, was also arrested for aggravated arson and aggravated burglary. Commissioners discussed the rezoning of an area on the West Side of Manhattan for the purpose of building a new Genesis Health Club location. The proposed building will be a two-story, 48,000 sq. foot building, complete with a pool, three tennis courts, a basketball court, and a jogging track. Mayor Usha Reddi expressed some concern over the demolition of trees to build the health club, citing that Manhattan residents value green space in their city, but overall, was in approval of the project.
