TOPEKA — Dozens of elected officials in Rep. Kevin Yoder’s congressional district in Kansas are pushing him to demand an end to the forced separation of families caught crossing the U.S. border illegally. Democratic state Rep. Jarrod Ousley of Merriam and Republican state Rep. Linda Gallagher of Lenexa delivered a letter Wednesday to Yoder’s office in Overland Park. MCPHERSON — McPherson Police Chief Robert McClarty says a 17-year-old boy has been arrested in the shooting death of a man whose body was found this week in a mobile home park. McClarty says the boy was arrested Tuesday afternoon. His name was not released. The news release says the suspect was arrested on charges of first-degree murder, burglary, theft and possession of stolen property in the shooting death of a 22-year-old Jordan Krell, of Canton. A man was taken to Via Christi hospital on Wednesday after falling from the saddle of his motorcycle near Manhattan according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. Jeremy Scott, a 31-year-old from Junction City, was riding eastbound on K-18 with a convoy at 9:30 a.m. when he lost control of his bike. The group came to a sudden stop causing Scott to lay down his motorcycle to avoid a collision and fall from the seat. According to KHP, Scott was not wearing a helmet at the time. The Manhattan City Commission discussed the proposed 2019 budget at their meeting in City Hall Tuesday. The new budget amounts $155 million total, a $6.7 million increase from 2018. Despite the increase, multiple city revenue sources are falling short of projections. Sales tax is one of the sources coming up short, expected to fall $100,000 to $150,000 below projected numbers for 2018. “We used to grow very, very exponentially every year in sales tax growth — we’re just not experiencing that right now and we don’t intend to in 2019,” Manhattan Assistant Director of Finance Hillary Badger told the commission.…

Manhattan Regional Airport is among 16 airports in Kansas that will be receiving federal funds through an ariport infrastructure grant. The grant was announced through Republican Congressman Roger Marshall’s office. According to Marshall’s office, a $7.4 million in grant monies will be distributed through Kansas First District airports, with the Manhattan airport set to receive $450,000. The Salina airport will receive the highest grant in the amount of $886,500. The Manhattan Fire Department battled a residential blaze Tuesday afternoon. At 3:31 p.m. the MFD was dispatched to 2501 Meadowood Drive for a report of a structure fire. Upon arrival, crews found a one-story residential structure with smoke showing. Crews were able to locate and extinguished a fire in the basement within 20 minutes of arriving on scene. A total of 16 firefighters responded on six fire apparatus. Investigators with Riley County Police Department and MFD determined Wednesday morning the cause for the fire was incendiary. LAWRENCE — Documents released by the University of Kansas show the school paid a $200,000 settlement to a former student who accused his theater professor of sexually assaulting him. The Lawrence Journal-World filed an open records request and received the documents Monday. The newspaper says the university didn’t admit wrongdoing in the confidential agreement signed in August 2017. The settlement was paid in exchange for the student dropping a federal lawsuit against the school.
