TOPEKA — The state plans to close a juvenile correctional facility in western Kansas in March. The Kansas Department of Corrections earlier this year announced plans to close the Larned Juvenile Correctional Facility because of a declining number of youths jailed at the site. The state’s juvenile incarceration operations are to be consolidated at a complex in Topeka. The department said in a release Thursday that it has set March 3, 2017, as the Larned facility’s final date of operation. According to public information officer Matt Droge, The RCPD Hazardous Devices Team responded to investigate the scene “out of an abundance of caution”. WICHITA — A federal judge has canceled a contempt hearing for Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach after he agreed to concessions that will fully register and clearly notify thousands of people that they can vote in November. The ruling Thursday by U.S. District Judge Julie Robinson comes a day before a hearing had been scheduled for Kobach to show why he should not be held in contempt for allegedly violating her May order. The U.S. Army announced Thursday that Maj. Gen. Joseph Martin will assume command of the 1st Infantry Division headquartered at Fort Riley. Fort Riley made the announcement through its Facebook page. Martin, a 1986 graduate of West Point, most recently served as commanding general of the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, Cali. Prior to that assignment, he served as the deputy commanding general for maneuver of the 1st Cavalry Division. Scientists from K-State’s Biosecurity Research Center Institute are part of a team that has developed a promising vaccine that could be used to stop the Zika virus. The vaccine, a DNA vaccine, is considered to be safer and more effective against the virus and could offer more long-term protection at a lower cost. Stephen Higgs, director of the facility said that the vaccine “is a successful advancement in developing control strategies for Zika virus by creating widespread immunity in susceptible populations.” Higgs also added that one shot of this vaccine could offer years of protection at an affordable cost, particularly…
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) A civilian employee accused of setting a co-worker on fire at a health center at Kansas’ Fort Leavenworth is facing an additional charge in a new federal indictment. Grand jurors on Wednesday in Kansas City, Kansas, indicted 54-year-old Clifford Currie of Leavenworth with one count each of assault with intent to commit murder and of assault with a dangerous weapon. The indictment replaces a complaint that charged Currie only with assault to commit murder. PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. (AP) Authorities have charged a teenager in connection with a reported sexual assault at a high school in suburban Kansas City. The Johnson County district attorney’s office said Wednesday that the 15-year-old male is charged with aggravated indecent liberties with a child, which is a felony, and lewd and lascivious behavior, a misdemeanor. A female freshman at Shawnee Mission East High School in Prairie Village reported being groped and fondled in a boys’ bathroom at the school on Sept. 14. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas is reporting that its infant mortality rate decreased in 2015 to the state’s lowest annual figure ever. The state Department of Health and Environment said Wednesday that there were 230 infant deaths last year for a mortality rate of 5.9 for every 1,000 live births. The figure was 6.3 deaths for every 1,000 live births in 2014, when 246 infant deaths were reported. The department also said the figure last year was 28 percent lower than it was in 1996.
