The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District, announces initiation of construction for two major construction projects near Tuttle Creek Dam, according to a press release. These projects include replacement of the bridge deck over the dam’s spillway structure at the east of Tuttle Creek Dam in Pottawatomie County and rehabilitation of the stilling basin (locally known as “the tubes”) located below the dam in Riley County. A 13-year-old Junction City Middle School student was arrested Monday after a threat was made, according to a press release from the Junction Police Department Tuesday night. The JCPD says it was made aware of the threat Monday and detectives and the school resource officer immediately began investigating the situation. The student was arrested at 10:19 that night on charges of criminal threat. The student was turned over to Juvenile Intake and made his first appearance in Geary County District Court Tuesday. A Wamego Police Department dispatcher was killed in an accident on Highway 24 late Monday night, according both the WPD and the Kansas Highway Patrol Tuesday morning. Authorities say 38-year-old Sarah Salinas of St. Marys was driving her car eastbound on Highway 24 and lost control on an icy bridge two-tenths of a mile from Camp Creek Road at 11:15 p.m. Monday night. Another vehicle driven by 51-year-old Donald Ebert of Louisville was westbound on 24 and also lost control of his pickup crossing the bridge. Both vehicles struck each other head-on. TOPEKA — A Kansas House Committee rejected a bill designed to prevent earthquakes triggered by oil and gas production wastewater disposal methods. The bill was supported by several people who said their homes were damaged by the quakes, while the oil and gas industry strongly opposed it. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that the Kansas Geological Survey says most earthquakes experienced in recent years in Kansas were caused by injecting large volumes of wastewater from oil and gas production into disposal wells. A home in Junction City was lost to a fire late Sunday night. The Junction City Fire Department told KMAN Monday morning crews were dispatched to 938 E. 4th Street trailer No. 8, for a report of a fully involved fire. JCPD arrived first and saw heavy smoke coming from trailer and fire from one window. JCFD Crews arrived on scene and began firefighting operations to apply water from exterior into bedroom window. The Kansas Highway Patrol has confirmed to KMAN Monday the identity of the woman who jumped out of a car to her death Wednesday south of Wamego. Authorities confirm 25-year-old Stephanie Bryan of Wabaunsee was the woman killed. KHP told KMAN Monday morning the incident was initially investigated as a crime scene, but ultimately ruled it suicide. The incident happened around 5 p.m. on K-99 on Feb. 14, just south of K-18.
