A prominent Manhattan businessman and former K-State backup quarterback waived his right to a preliminary hearing in the Riley County District Courthouse Friday afternoon. Zachary Burton, 38, was arrested on four counts of unlawful sexual relations with a female high school senior on June 7. Judge William Malcolm accepted the waiver and set Burton’s arraignment for Sept. 22 at 2:30 p.m. Burton, who owns Fieldhouse Development, Inc., was an assistant boys’ basketball coach and substitute teacher at Riley County USD 378. The mystery illness that has sent several students and faculty members home with vomiting, diarrhea and nausea symptoms since Aug. 22 is still an enigma. “We don’t know,” Riley County Health Department Director Jennifer Green told KMAN Thursday afternoon. “What I think was getting reported before was just absences. And what we really need is the number of confirmed cases of nausea and vomiting. The City of Manhattan will host four open houses to educate local residents about a question that will appear on the General Election ballot on November 8th. Voters living within Manhattan city limits will be asked to consider a two-tenths of a cent increase in the Manhattan sales tax to fund street repairs and Safe Routes to School projects. TOPEKA — Sentencing has been postponed for a 29-year-old Topeka man accused of helping a would-be jihadist’s unsuccessful plot to bomb Fort Riley. U.S. District Judge Daniel Crabtree said Thursday he’s considering whether Alexander Blair’s crime qualifies for the five-year sentence prosecutors want. Blair’s attorney is seeking a sentence of five years’ probation. Sentencing is now set for Oct. 18. FORT LEAVENWORTH — Authorities are investigating after an employee at the Fort Leavenworth medical facility assaulted two co-workers. The fort said on its website that the Munson Army Health Center will be closed Thursday while the probe into Wednesday’s assault is underway. The online posting says the suspect is in custody and that both victims are being treated for their injuries. No other information was immediately available. Officers with the Riley County Police Department are investigating a report of sexual exploitation of a child in the city limits of Manhattan. This investigation began on September 7 and due to the ongoing nature of this investigation no further information is available at the time of this report.
