Authorities say a person killed in an incident south of Wamego late Wednesday afternoon had jumped from a vehicle, according to WIBW in Topeka. The Kansas Highway Patrol said it happened around 5 p.m. on K-99, just south of K-18. A trooper at the scene said a woman who was a passenger in a southbound vehicle jumped from the car, and was hit by another vehicle going the same direction. WICHITA — The mother of a Kansas man fatally shot by police after a hoax emergency call has urged lawmakers to toughen penalties for making false calls. Lisa Finch spoke at hearing Tuesday on a bill that would allow prosecutors to file a murder charge if someone is killed. The Wichita Eagle reports she wants the Legislature to name the bill after her son, Andrew Finch. Scott Perry, 57, of Manhattan, was arrested in the 700 block of Dondee Dr. in Manhattan on February 12, 2018 at approximately 10:05 PM. Perry was arrested on a charge of violation of protection order. Perry was issued a bond of $5,000.00. Perry was not confined at the time of this report. Officers filed a report for sexual battery in Manhattan on February 12, 2018. Officers listed a 25 year old female as the victim and a 32 year old male known to her as the suspect. LAWRENCE — An attorney for a chemistry instructor who is fighting deportation to Bangladesh says her office is considering all possible options to get him released from a Hawaii detention center and home to his wife and children in Kansas. TOPEKA — Kansas legislators are overhauling the state’s drunk driving laws to crack down on offenders and replace a defunct law that allowed police to compel suspects to blood alcohol testing. The U.S. Supreme Court determined a warrantless breath test is permissible, but police would need to obtain a warrant to conduct a blood test. Topeka Capital-Journal reports that the Senate Judiciary Committee is considering bills to clarify how officers should handle cases in which a suspect refuses testing.
