Junction City Police are investigating a stabbing, reported Wednesday morning. Just before 9:30 a.m., members of the Junction City Police Department and the Geary County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of the 900 block of East 4th Street in Junction City in reference to a disturbance in which a subject had been stabbed. Upon arrival contact was made with the suspect, identified as Daniel Genson, 22, of Junction City. MANHATTAN — The Center of Excellence for Emerging Zoonotic and Animal Diseases, or CEEZAD, at Kansas State University will use a $2.3 million federal grant to study the safety in livestock of a newly developed vaccine to protect humans from the Ebola Zaire virus. The grant is from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency in the U.S. Department of Defense through a collaboration with the commercial firm NewLink Genetics. A $100,000 matching contribution from the state of Kansas’ NBAF Transition Funds brings the total project funding to $2.4 million. Derek Shepard, 31, of Ogden, Kansas was arrested while in the 400 block of 15th Street in Ogden on Wednesday August 3 at approximately 11:05 PM. Shepard was arrested on the offense of failure to appear (X2) with an original offense of domestic battery. He was given a bond of $9,000. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A former U.S. Army private who’d been stationed in Kansas has been ordered to spend two years in federal prison after he admitted stealing the identifies of fellow soldiers. Twenty-four-year-old Todd Newbrough pleaded guilty Tuesday in Topeka, Kansas, to one count of aggravated identity theft. Newbrough also was ordered to pay more than $23,400 in restitution. Authorities say Newbrough admitted he used his Army position to access personal information about fellow soldiers in his unit at Fort Riley, and then used that information to obtain credit cards and credit lines in the soldiers’ names.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A student who was sexually battered in the bathroom of a Wichita high school is suing the principal and school board for negligence. The Wichita Eagle reports that the suit filed in Sedgwick County District Court cites unsafe security practices at Wichita East High School, where the student was assaulted in September. The Eagle and The Associated don’t normally name victims of sex crimes. Twenty-nine-year-old Guy Harris is awaiting sentencing for sexual battery after pleading guilty to the misdemeanor last month. The Wamego City Commission set the 2017 budget hearing date. At Tuesday’s meeting, City Manager Merl Page reviewed the minutes of the July 25 special meeting, where the Commission approved the rough draft of the 2017 Budget that reflected a mill levy increase of 1.772 mills over last year’s budget. Shiela Huffman, 34, of Manhattan was arrested while in the 2600 block of 60th Ave. on Tuesday August 2 at approximately 2:00 PM. The Manhattan City Commission approved three requests Tuesday, all having to do with rezoning, annexing and changes to development plans. The first request was to annex and rezone lot 1 of the Blueville Nursery subdivision from County C-4 to C-5, highway service commercial district. As part of the request, the Commission set a public hearing for September sixth in regards to Blueville’s petition to create a Transportation Development District.
