Officers with the Riley County Police Department made an arrest for possession of stolen property in the 800 block of Vattier Street in Manhattan Thursday at approximately 1:30 PM following a traffic stop. Based on information available at the time of the stop and out of an abundance of caution, officers performed a “high risk traffic stop,” meaning police called the driver and occupants out of the car instead of approaching the vehicle. Emergency crews to were called to the Wildcat Marina at Tuttle Creek Lake Thursday as a precaution. The call came in shortly after 9 a.m. of two boats capsizing, with several emergency crews responding including the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Riley County EMS, Kansas Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, Tuttle Creek State Park, and Manhattan and Blue Township Fire Departments. All boaters and coaches were out of the water by the time crews arrived. The boaters were of the Manhattan Junior Crew, an independent club for rowers outside Manhattan High School and is composed of high school-aged rowers.
WICHITA — A southern Kansas man faces up to 11 years in federal prison after admitting he fraudulently obtained more than 60,000 DVD movies at discount prices from the Disney Movie Club. Forty-seven-year-old Harvey Self of Derby pleaded guilty Wednesday to two counts of filing false tax returns and one count of giving the U.S. Postal Service false names and address for fraudulent purposes. Self admits he created aliases to qualify for discounts while buying DVD and Blue-ray movies, then resold the movies at a profit. WICHITA — A Kansas police chief has received a White House invitation after a cookout that included law enforcement and leaders of the Black Lives Matter movement. The Wichita Eagle reports that Wichita Police Chief Gordon Ramsay was asked to go to the White House on Friday to discuss community policing. City spokesman Ken Evans said he had to turn down the invitation because he’s serving as the justice of the peace at a weekend wedding. But Evans says Ramsay will look to reschedule. TOPEKA — The Kansas Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence imposed on a man convicted of fatally shooting a sheriff during a 2005 drug raid. Kansas hasn’t executed anyone in more than 50 years, and Friday’s decision in Scott Cheever’s case is only the second time the court has upheld a death sentence under the state’s 1994 capital punishment law. The decision came four years after the court ordered a new trial for Cheever over questions about an expert’s testimony. The U.S. Supreme Court directed the Kansas court to reconsider. Kansas State University’s Bryan Pinkall has that Olympic touch. The assistant professor of music is again lending his talents to the staging of an Olympic opening ceremony. This time he is part of the opening ceremony performance operations team for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Two men were sentenced and a jury trial was set for another in Pottawatomie County Court Thursday. Jarvis Clark was sentenced to 24 months with the Department of Corrections for discharge of a firearm in an occupied building…as well as six months with DOC for aggravated endangering of a child. Clark was arrested in April after a reported domestic disturbance in which a caller reported gunshots had been fired at a home on East Webster Street in Louisville.
