An overnight fire resulted in no injuries but caused $175,000 in losses to an apartment house in Manhattan, authorities said Thursday morning. The fire was reported at 2:22 a.m. at a house at 600 Osage St., about three blocks north of the city’s downtown area. Upon their arrival, crews found a three-story apartment house with smoke and fire coming out of the second floor. Of the estimated dollar loss, $100,000 was to the structure and $75,000 was to its contents. According to the Manhattan Fire Department, the building’s owner is listed as KAT Property Management in Shawnee.

Jackie Hartman, Kansas State University’s chief of staff and its first director of community relations, has announced her retirement, effective Feb. 1. Appointed by President Kirk Schulz in 2010 as director of community relations and assistant to the president, Hartman was later named chief of staff. She currently reports directly to President Richard Myers and serves as a member of the cabinet. She leads and coordinates community affairs for the university, representing the president’s office on issues related to the city of Manhattan. A woman living in exile after spending two years as president of the east African country of Malawi is speaking at Kansas State University. Joyce Banda’s Jan 29 appearance is open to the public. Banda was the Republic of Malawi’s first female president from 2012 through 2014. She has also been a women’s rights activist, entrepreneur, educator and lawmaker. She is credited with implementing reforms that helped turn around the nation’s ailing economy. The State Fire Marshal has released the name of a man who died in a Dec. 26th fire in Pottawatomie County. The State Fire Marshal Wednesday morning says 35-year-old Wade Parkhurst of Wamego was the fatality victim located within the residence after the blaze. This information is still pending official identification from the medical examiner’s office, according to the fire marshal’s news release. The Kansas Office of the State Fire Marshal’s Investigation Division joined the St. George Fire Department in the investigation of the fire. A Wamego firefighter has died following a fall on New Year’s Day, according to a news release from the Wamego Fire Department this morning. The WFD says firefighter John Randle sustained a life-threatening injury from a fall while returning fire apparatus to service following the completed response to a structure fire during the early morning hours Monday. Randle was air-lifted from the Wamego Health Center to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka and died there Tuesday. KMAN will have more information as it becomes available.
WICHITA — Federal funds to help retrain Wichita-area workers who have been laid off have fallen by nearly $870,000 in the last two years. The funding cut comes as the local aircraft industry is looking to hire more skilled workers. The Wichita Eagle reports that the Workforce Alliance of South Central Kansas primarily uses the federal funding to help low-income workers or those displaced by job loss pay for technical training in aircraft jobs. A St. George family is without a home after a fire early Monday morning. The home of Rodney and Terri Schump in St. George Kansas caught fire in the process of thawing frozen water pipes. It’s suspected cobwebs and lint in the crawl space below the home ignited. Both occupants of the home were able to get out safely. The fire consumed the home and appears to be a total loss.
