A 1st Infantry Division soldier died in a two-vehicle collision near Fort Stockton, Texas, Saturday, according to a press release from Fort Riley Tuesday. First Lt. Stephanie Hetland, a chemical officer with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Brigade Engineer Battalion, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Inf. Div., was driving to her next duty station – Fort Bliss, Texas – when the collision occurred on Interstate 10 about 6.5 miles west of Fort Stockton. WICHITA — The widow of a Kansas man killed last month by an undersheriff has asked a court to release video and audio recordings that her attorney says show her husband was unarmed and trying to obey instructions when he was shot. Attorney Michael Kuckelman says recordings he viewed are troubling and the public has a right to see them. Wildcats force school-record 19 steals in easy win In its final tuneup before this weekend’s trip to the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational, Kansas State crushed Northern Arizona 80-58 Monday night at Bramlage Coliseum. The universal power of probability was the decider in two city council races Monday morning inside the Riley County Commission Chambers. Rodger Graham and Russell Rohlman each received 72 votes in the Nov. 7 election for Ogden City Council, while two write-in candidates, Jay Caley and John King, each received two votes in Riley. According to state statute, tie-breakers are decided by the County Board of Canvassers, or in this case, the commission. In past tied elections, the board has flipped a coin or drawn straws to determine the elected positions. Riley County Law Board members took action on only one item at their Monday meeting, which took very little time to approve unanimously. The Manhattan area continues to have an extremely low unemployment rate, with the October numbers indicating 2.3 percent for the Manhattan metro area including Pottawatomie and Riley Counties. That’s down from last year’s October numbers of 3.2 Even the Manhattan-Junction City combined statistical area shows 2.6 percent, well below 2016 numbers of 3.7. The numbers released Friday by the Kansas Department of Labor also indicate relatively low numbers of 2.3 for both Riley and Pottawatomie Counties, three percent for Clay County, and even Geary county, which tends to be higher, has a 4.2 percent rate this October.
