HOLTON — A man whose cases sharply divided his small Kansas town was given more jail time by a judge who departed from a plea deal. Jackson County District Judge Norbert Marek on Wednesday sentenced 23-year-old Jacob Ewing to a total of 7.5 years for attempted rape of a woman and child exploitation related to images he had of an underage girl. Ewing was sentenced in September to 27 years for raping and sodomizing two other women. TOPEKA — State agencies have asked for more than $274 million in new funding for next year just months after Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback called the current budget bloated. The agencies are collectively seeking a 4.1 percent increase in spending in next year’s general fund budget. The Wichita Eagle reports preliminary budget requests for the next fiscal year became public when agencies presented them to a legislative committee last week. A January 11th arraignment has been set for a man who faces a variety of charges in Pottawatomie County, including possession of maijuana with intent to sell. Robert Snyder waived his preliminary hearing that had been set for Wednesday. Snyder was arrested in April following search warrants in the area of Canary and Sparrow Lanes and Elbo View Drive northeast of Manhattan following an investigation into illegal drug use and sales in Pottawatomie County. A variety of lingerie was on display Tuesday at the Manhattan Arts Center, as part of the Manhattan Fairy Godmothers Annual Lingerie Luncheon. Head fairy Therese Miller, who serves as board chair of the Fairy Godmothers group, tells KMAN the lingerie items are donated to the Emergency Shelter, Crisis Center, Big Lakes, and Homestead Ministry in Manhattan. Items donated Tuesday included not only lingerie, but also pajamas, housecoats, slippers, and monetary contributions. At the City of Manhattan commission work session Tuesday night, Public Works Director Robert Ott presented a list of recommendations to update the City’s ordinances regarding large trash dumpsters and containers. Referring to a draft ordinance he shared with disposal service companies operating in the City, Ott proposed an annual permit fee, estimated to be $100-$250, to be paid for by the companies.
