TOPEKA — The leader of the Kansas Senate says the state Supreme Court timed a recent decision on school finance to help Democrats elect a governor. Republican Susan Wagle on Friday denounced the court’s October ruling that found the state’s school funding formula is unconstitutional. The justices ordered the Legislature to show how it plans to respond by April 30. Wagle says the justices want to elect a Democratic governor in order to have more Democrats appointed to the court. The latest cost of living index complied by the American Chamber of Commerce Researchers Association says Manhattan tied for the third most expensive city to live in the state out of the eight cities that participated. Topeka had the highest cost of living with an index score of 96, followed by Dodge City at 95.3. Manhattan tied with Wichita for third at 92.4. An Emmett woman faces a variety of drug-related charges following her arrest by Riley County Police Wednesday afternoon. Christina Wahquahboshkuk, 42, was taken into custody in the 300 block of Colorado Street at approximately 3:50 PM. Wahquahboshkuk was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana, ignition interlock device, use or possession of paraphernalia and possession of opiates, opium, or narcotics. TOPEKA — President Donald Trump has approved a disaster declaration for Johnson and Wyandotte counties for heavy damage from storms in late July. The declaration from the president orders federal assistance to supplement state and local recovery efforts for areas affected by severe storms, straight-line winds, and flooding from July 22 to July 27. Federal funding is available for local and state governments and some private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repairs or replacements needed after the storm. TOPEKA — Kansas legislative leaders plan to spend $400,000 to get help in drafting a new public school funding law, including separate lawyers for the House and Senate. The five top Republicans in the GOP-controlled Legislature agreed on the plan Tuesday. The two Democrats present at legislative leaders’ meeting called it a waste of money and opposed it.
