A Manhattan man arrested in July for aggravated burglary and assault had his preliminary hearing Friday. Devon Davis, 28, was bound over on one count of aggravated burglary, assault and criminal threat, according to Pottawatomie County Attorney Sherri Schuck. A count for attempted 2nd-degree murder was dismissed. His arraignment is set for Sept. 7 at 1:30 p.m. and remains in jail on a $250,000 bound. On July 19, a news release from the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office indicated it received a transferred 911 call from the Riley County Police Department in reference to a burglary in progress. Manhattan area unemployment numbers remain somewhat low according to numbers released Friday by the Kansas Department of Labor.  The Manhattan metropolitan area, which includes Riley and Pottawatomie Counties was 3.7 percent in July, compared to 3.4 percent in June. The Manhattan/Junction City combined statistical area was 4.2 percent in July–with that number nearly half a percentage point below the month before.  Manhattan by itself had a 3.5 percent rate and Junction City showed a 5.7 percentage for July.  All area counties showed an increase in July including Riley County with 3.8 percent, Pottawatomie county at 3.7,  Clay County’s  4.5 percent. and Geary County’s…

TOPEKA — A constipated 49-year-old gorilla at the Topeka Zoo is recovering after having surgery. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that zoo Director Brendan Wiley says the procedure the lowland gorilla, named Tiffany, underwent Wednesday went “really well.” A significant amount of stool was found in her colon and was flushed out. Wiley says the best-case scenario is that she will bounce back. If issues continue, test results will be reviewed to determine how to treat her constipation. The state Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism says invasive zebra mussels have been found in Tuttle Creek Reservoir. The 12,500-acre U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lake is a popular recreation area six miles north of Manhattan. The department said in a news release that the zebra mussel population is currently small but noted there is no way to completely rid a lake of the species. They are usually introduced into lakes after attaching themselves to boats or from bait buckets. Zebra mussels can produce huge populations in a short time. A 78-year-old Wamego man died in a two vehicle accident on Highway 24 at Levee Drive at 1:14 p.m. Thursday. Francis Whitney died in the collision KMAN first told you about Thursday afternoon,  with traffic blocked in eastbound lanes for a couple of hours.  According to the Kansas Highway Patrol , Whitney was driving a Chevrolet Lumina southbound on Levee Drive, with a second vehicle, a Toyota Tundra, westbound on Highway 24. EL DORADO — Gov. Sam Brownback has announced pay raises at state prisons in the wake of inmate disturbances that have drawn public attention to staff shortages. Uniformed officers across the state would receive about a 5 percent raise. Officers at El Dorado Correctional Facility will see raises of about 10 percent. The increase would kick in later this month if the employees’ union agrees. Brownback says the state can fund the raises in the short term but lawmakers would have to find money next session to continue them. The move would boost pay from $13.95 to $14.66 per hour…

A Fort Riley solider died Wednesday in Topeka, according to a press release from the army post Thursday. Spc. Richard Cox, an indirect fire infantryman with Troop A, 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Inf. Div., died at Stormont Vail Hospital. Cox suffered a gunshot wound Sunday at Fort Riley and was medically evacuated to Stormont Vail. “The troopers of the squadron mourn the loss of Spc. Cox,” said Lt. Col. A former K-State student was sentenced to 155 months in prison for rape. Jared Gihring, who was in the Riley County District Courthouse with Brenda Jordan as counsel Thursday, was found guilty on May 26 for the 2014 rape of Sara Weckhorst inside a fraternity house. Weckhorst was in the courtroom and is also the plaintiff in the Title IX suit against KSU. She claims the university did not do its due diligence in addressing Gihring after she informed KSU of the rape. K-State argued off-campus rapes are not in its jurisdiction, though Title IX laws differ from that assessment.…
