BURLINGTON — Dredging underway at an east-central Kansas reservoir is being touted as important in ensuring that area’s water supply to customers who include a nuclear power plant. Gov. Sam Brownback on Tuesday directed the dredging of the John Redmond Reservoir near Burlington to begin. He calls it a significant step in preserving the water resource for future generations. The Kansas Water Office says that since 1964, the reservoir has lost an estimated 42 percent of its conservation pool storage capacity, partly through sediment accumulation. The Onaga and Havensville Police Chief has filed for election to the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s position. Daniel Costlow filed with the Pottawatomie County Clerk’s office Tuesday morning. Costlow is listed as a Republican from Havensville. Costlow filed by petition, as he says he felt it would be good to visit with and get to know the community. HAYS — Authorities say the body of a man has been discovered in a ditch near Hays. The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office says that around 10:15 p.m. Sunday, a motorist found the body of 22-year-old Dylan Weiser of Thornton, Colorado, about five miles south of Hays. Ellis County Attorney Thomas Drees said Weiser used to live in La Crosse, Kansas. An investigation is ongoing.
Officers with the Riley County Police Department arrested Christopher Futrell, 22, of Rowlett, Texas on May 16, 2016 at approximately 6:15 PM. Futrell was at the Riley County Police Department when arrested on this warrant for the offense of probation violation (X2). He was given “no bond” on one of these warrants and $50,000.00 on the other. At the time of this report was confined at the Riley County Jail. TOPEKA — Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback signed a bill Monday that he said is aimed at freeing more people from poverty, but opponents argue the new welfare restrictions leave families without a safety net during financial difficulties. Under the new law Kansans will be limited to 24 months on cash assistance over their lifetime. The previous limit was 36 months. Able-bodied recipients of food assistance also will be required to participate in an employment or training program and not quit a job that offers at least 30 hours of work per week. After several months of discussion, the Riley County Law Board came to an agreement on a budget for the Riley County Police Department. The budget amounts to about $20,291,055.19, which is nearly 2.7 percent over last year’s. Included are additions for court security, a mental health designated employee, and a dispatcher. Court security created considerable discussion with a presentation by Riley County Court Chief Judge Meryl Wilson at the beginning of the meeting.
