Clarification: Riley County EMS/Ambulance Director David Adams informed KMAN Friday the $579,479 increase in the 2018 EMS/Ambulance budget includes budgetary corrections and is not entirely an increase in salaries and wages. Adams said salaries and wages account for roughly half the increase.  Riley County commissioners approved pay structures for incoming EMS and ambulance positions Thursday morning after the review of a wage study by McGrath Human Resources Group. Two apparent financial card readers or “skimmers” were found inside fuel pumps at two Wamego convenience stores Wednesday. These were seized by the Wamego Police Department after discovering them during routine fuel pump inspections at The Last Stop and Red Raider Express.  It is unknown how long the skimmers had been inside the pumps.  Wamego PD says it is important to understand these businesses are victims of this electronic criminal activity and staff is cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Updated early Friday: West Elementary School in Wamego is back in session Friday after being evacuated for a gas line break Thursday morning. Wamego USD 320 Supt. Tim Winter tells KMAN school officials were given permission to return to the building by 12:30pm Thursday. Although students were dismissed for the day, the teaching staff did finish their day in the school working yesterday. Winter explains the city was able to cap the leak much quicker than originally anticipated. Officers filed a report for aggravated battery (domestic) and criminal restraint in Manhattan on October 4, 2017. Officers listed a 25 year old male and a 26 year old female as both the victim and the suspect in the case. Due to the nature of the crimes reported, no additional information will be released.  Joy Lara, 26, of Manhattan, was arrested in the 1500 block of McCain Ln. on October 4, 2017 at approximately 10:25 PM. The Pottawatomie county Sheriff’s Department is investigating the theft of a construction trailer this past week. Sheriff Greg Riat indicates on Monday deputies responded to the 9000 block of Roepke Road in rural Manhattan, for the theft of a construction trailer. The trailer is described as a white 2000 Pace enclosed trailer.  The trailer reportedly was stolen sometime between Saturday around Noon and Monday at about 8:30am. The trailer, owned by Hedke Construction contained construction equipment. Total loss is estimated at over $10,000.

A fatal accident was reported in Clay County  Wednesday evening. Mary Rowland, 57, of Longford died in the two vehicle crash on K-82 westbound at K-15, one mile south of Clay Center.  According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a Chevrolet Silverado driven by Zachary Howard, 28, of Clay Center was westbound on K-82 and failed to stop at a stop sign, causing his vehicle to strike a Ford Taurus driven by Rowland which was southbound on K-15. The Manhattan Fire Department will observe National Fire Prevention Week by educating the community about fire safety. That’s according to MFD Driver, Gregg Van De Creek who spoke to KMAN after accepting a Fire Prevention Week proclamation from the Manhattan City Commission meeting on Tuesday. “We’ll be going around the schools to teach children,” Van De Creek said, “then we’ll kind of end it with a big finale of our open house.” MFD’s open house will be held on Sunday the 15th from 11-3 p.m. at Fire Station Headquarters. WASHINGTON — A presidential nominee is defending his decision as Kansas governor to scrap an order that barred discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Sam Brownback is in line to be ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom. The Republican was testifying on Wednesday before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. A 2007 executive order applied to hiring and employment decisions by agencies under the Kansas governor’s direct control. Brownback says the Democratic governor at that time, Kathleen Sebelius, acted unilaterally on an issue that state lawmakers should have resolved.
