TOPEKA — A woman accidentally has set her apartment on fire in an attempt to kill a bug by burning it with a small, flip-style lighter. Monique Quarles tells The Topeka Capital-Journal that sparks shot out of the lighter and caused a mattress to catch fire in the Fairlawn Green Apartments complex in Topeka. After she was unable to put out the fire, Quarles left the unit with two others and began alerting residents of the fire. Fire officials say 13 adults and six children have been displaced. Officers responded to a report of an injury accident at the intersection of Kimball Ave. and Plymouth Rd. on July 24, 2017 at approximately 7:50 AM. When officers arrived on scene, they found that a maroon 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser, driven by Merrilee Omeilia, 40, of Manhattan, had been struck by a bicycle, ridden by Ryan Swanson, 44, of Manhattan. Swanson was transported by EMS to Via Christi for treatment of his injuries. Omeilia was issued a citation for failure to yield at an intersection. Kansas State University and the city of Manhattan were well-represented at a recent international conference–known as the International Town and Gown Association. Student body President Jack Ayres talked to Manhattan area  Intergovernmental leaders Monday, highlighting part of the conference’s purpose,  which was an opportunity to hear from different cities and universities about what has been done to bolster responses and efforts to prevent sexual assault and to increase responsible use of alcohol. A Topeka man was sentenced Monday to 30 years in prison for attempting to detonate a vehicle bomb on Fort Riley on April 10, 2015. On Feb. 3, 2016, John T. Booker, Jr., now 22, pleaded guilty to one count of attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and one count of attempted destruction of government property by fire or explosion. All of Kansas representatives have co-sponsored a bill which would award one of the state’s most famous citizens one of the most prestigious awards in the nation. According to a press release from U.S. Senator Pat Roberts, Roberts and U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins introduced bipartisan legislation in both houses to award former Kansas U.S. Senator Robert J. Dole the Congressional Gold Medal. Riley County Police Officers responded to a report of an injury accident at the intersection of Westwood Rd. and Oak St. Friday at approximately 5:41 PM. On Monday’s RCPD activity report,  police say when officers arrived on scene, they found an overturned  Harley Davidson motorcycle, driven by William Bartnick, 22, of Fort Riley.
