Gov. Sam Brownback today announced that Lieutenant General Perry Wiggins will lead the Governor’s Military Council as its new executive director, according to a press release from the governor’s office. General Wiggins will officially assume duties as the executive director this fall, upon retirement from the United States Army following 33 years of service. Wiggins currently serves as Commanding General of U.S. Army North and Senior Commander Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Riley County Attorney Barry Wilkerson was recognized for his service to crime victims during this week’s Crime Victim’s Rights Conference in Topeka, according to a press release from the Kansas Attorney General’s office. Wilkerson was presented the Outstanding Prosecutor Victim Service Award by Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt during an awards ceremony Thursday morning. SALINA — Salina police say a 12-year-old boy has been arrested following an incident with a toy gun on a school bus and an unrelated incident involving a knife on a playground. Capt. Mike Sweeney said two girls on a school bus Tuesday afternoon reported to the bus monitor that another student was playing with a gun. The bus driver was notified and police responded to the bus, where they confiscated a 4-inch-long toy rifle cap gun. The boy was released to his mother. PITTSBURG — A southeast Kansas standoff has ended with an officer using a stun gun on a suspect. The Pittsburg Morning Sun reports that the 53-year-old female suspect is accused of threatening a relative with a gun before calling police around noon Wednesday. Pittsburg Police Department Major Brent Narges says she told police responding to the disturbance that she was armed. Narges said the woman was alone in the home when officers arrived and surrounded the area. The investigation into a Tuesday morning fire at a Junction City apartment complex has concluded. Interim Junction City Fire Chief, Richard Rook said Thursday an “extensive investigation” has revealed the fire started on an outside deck, appearing to have rapidly spread to other exposed areas and into the attic. The roof area became engulfed, resulting in a structural collapse that involved the entire third floor. The fire’s cause remains undetermined and a dollar amount of the loss is unknown. The Kansas Board of Regents announced its pick for interim president of Kansas State University Thursday. Gen. Richard B. Myers will take the position. Myers has served as the principal military adviser to the President of the United States, Secretary of Defense, and the National Security Council. More information on the retired U.S. Air Force General’s appointment, will be released next week during a press conference. Myers will fill the void left by outgoing president Kirk Schulz, who, as previously reported, accepted an offer to be the new president at Washington State University on March 25.

FORT RILEY — A 1st Infantry Divisions soldier who died in Manhattan has been identified. Capt. Yohan Lee, a chaplain assigned to the 3rd Assault Helicopter Battalion, 1st Aviation Regiment, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Inf. Div., died suddenly April 9. He was 45. Lee arrived at Fort Riley in January 2014, entering the Army from Virginia. He was a Manhattan resident. “Our hearts are heavy today over the loss of Chap. Lee,” said Col. John M. An out of control prescribed burn saw fire crews from Randolph, Riley County, and Leonardville responding to the area of Barton Road on Wednesday. Crews battled the blaze from noon until nearly 11 p.m. Riley County Fire Chief, Pat Collins says the total number of acres burned is still to be determined. According to Collins, April has seen eight days of no burning in the region. Despite burn bans, over 16,000 acres of land have been burned as a result of controlled burning that’s gotten out of hand.
