It won’t be long before Riley County commissioners formulate the 2017 budget. Riley County Budget and Finance Officer Johnette Shepek unveiled the 2017 budget calendar during Monday morning’s commission meeting. “Just so that the public knows, the 2017 budget calendar can be found on the county’s website,” she said. “Right now, we’re developing the 2017 personnel budgets for all the departments in Riley County. “So we’re busy collecting information and crunching the numbers.” Highlights of the calendar include a discussion of baseline estimates with the commissioners on April 4 and the commission should expect total appraised values in the county…

“Whack a mole” was a term used by Riley County Law Board Chair Robert Boyd when describing this year’s Fake Patty’s Day in Aggieville, which even though it’s been more than two weeks continued to dominate discussion at a governmental meeting. TOPEKA — The seven justices of the Kansas Supreme Court are asking a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit from former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that the lawsuit is connected to the 2013 decision to indefinitely suspend Kline’s law license over an investigation he led into abortion clinics. Kline’s attorneys argue that the court lacked the four justices necessary to make the decision. That’s because five of the court’s seven justices recused themselves, partially at Kline’s request. The case then was heard by two Supreme Court justices and five other Kansas judges from lower courts. At issue…

TOPEKA — A lawyer hired by the Kansas Legislature is questioning its staff as he attempts to compile evidence for an ongoing lawsuit over school funding. Attorney Toby Crouse interviewed legislative researchers and bill-drafting attorneys during an unusual meeting Monday of the Joint Legislative Budget Committee. The committee’s members were present, and the meeting was open to the public. A court reporter was compiling a transcript of the meeting. Four school districts have pursued a lawsuit against the state over education funding since 2010. A Manhattan man was sentenced for three counts that will include prison time. Ryan Routson, 33, was sentenced for an aggravated battery charge, vehicular homicide and drug charges by Judge David Stutzman in the Riley County District Courthouse Monday morning. Routson will face 24 months of probation for aggravated battery and 12 months in the Riley County Jail, starting immediately, for vehicular homicide. He was also sentenced to 12 months in county jail for the drug charges, with are concurrent. Riley County Police found a 25-year-old Fort Riley man dead inside a vehicle Saturday at approximately 9:44AM. Police responded to Anneberg Park in Manhattan for the report of a deceased male inside a vehicle and located Shaun P. Covington dead inside his parked vehicle with an apparent gun shot wound. Police do not suspect any foul play and the investigation is on-going at this time. Fort Riley indicates Sgt. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The Kansas House has given first-round approval to a bill that would give legislators more oversight of bonds or other debt for major building projects. The measure advanced Friday on a voice vote. The House expects to take final action Monday. The bill would require the Legislature to approve the debt for a project worth $25 million or more. Legislative leaders and the governor could approve smaller projects. The requirements also would cover lease-purchase agreements.
