In less than a month USD 383 will enter the 2018 fiscal year, and it will have $50,000 left over from the year before. At Wednesday night’s meeting, board members were basking in the afterglow of legislative victories in Topeka this week. On Monday, the legislature passed S.B. 19, and director of business Lew Faust referred to the new formula as a “good start.” The $50,000 saved from overtime pay will compliment the projected revenue additions as a result of S.B. 19. A man who survived a fatal shooting incident at Nelson’s Landing last month has been identified in an affidavit obtained by KMAN. As reported earlier one person died in the shooting, with another person critically injured. Riley County police responded to a reported shooting in the 2800 block of Nelson’s Landing at 6 p.m. on May 21. German Gonzalez-Garcia, 39, was dead from an apparent gunshot wound. \WICHITA — A communications professor at Wichita State University says she’s resigning because a law allowing concealed weapons on campus is “in opposition to the values of higher education.” The Wichita Eagle reports that Deborah Ballard-Reisch submitted a letter to university President John Bardo on Monday saying she plans to retire July 1, the day the law goes into effect. The Kansas 2013 law allowing people to bring guns into public buildings had given colleges until this summer to comply. TOPEKA — Kansas legislators have voted to override Republican Gov. Sam Brownback’s veto of a bill that would repeal or roll back past income tax cuts he has championed. The House voted 88-31 Tuesday night to overturn Brownback’s veto of a bill that will increase income taxes to fix the state budget and provide additional funds for public schools. Supporters had four votes more than the two-thirds majority necessary to override a veto. The Senate earlier voted 27-13 to override, exactly a two-thirds majority. The findings from the 2017 Community Survey administered to Manhattan residents this spring suggests the community is ready to vote “yes” on a quarter-cent quality-of-life sales tax issue on the November ballot. On Tuesday evening, Manhattan City Commissioners heard the findings of the survey which was administered to 2,500 homes this spring. Dr. Josephine Gatti Schafer, an assistant professor of political science at Kansas State University, began writing the survey in December of last year with city staff. The survey was sent out through mail in March and made available online. It elicited 604 responses for a 24% response rate, Schafer said. An overwhelming majority…
WICHITA — Police say a child who was hospitalized in critical condition after being found in a hot car in Wichita is improving. Sgt. Jesse Hancock says the girl and her siblings apparently were playing hide and seek Monday before her father found her in the car. The Wichita Eagle reports police spokesman Officer Paul Cruz said Tuesday investigators are still trying to determine what happened. The girl’s condition was improving Tuesday but no other details were released.
