The Riley County Police Department arrested Petra Amaro, 37, of Topeka, on January 22, 2016, at approximately 3:15 p.m. while at the Riley County Law Enforcement Center. Amaro was arrested on the offenses of possession of a hallucinogenic drug, possession of an opiate, opium, or narcotic drug, and interference with law enforcement. He was also arrested on the offenses of driving while suspended and violation of the offender registration act. These offenses were listed on two warrants from Riley County, Kansas. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) The Wichita school district says seven years after it ended mandatory busing, nearly a quarter of the district’s 85 schools are considered single-race schools. Single-race schools have 60 percent or more of students of one race. The Wichita Eagle reports some schools in predominantly black neighborhoods lost the racial balance they achieved with forced busing. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) A man has been taken into custody after authorities say he threatened several people with a knife in a university residence hall in Lawrence. Lawrence Police Department Sgt. Ted Bordman says the 23-year-old was arrested around 5 p.m. Sunday. Bordman says several people were threatened with a knife in a dorm room in a Haskell Indian Nations University residence hall. TOPEKA — A Kansas Senate panel will consider a measure aimed at banning discrimination against gun dealers and manufacturers. The measure would function like laws that prevent religious or racial discrimination and allow gun dealers to sue when they feel discriminated against. The Wichita Eagle reports the bill will be heard Thursday by a Senate committee. Sen. Jacob LaTurner says the measure was in response to a 2013 federal initiative aimed at preventing fraudulent businesses from using the banking system. KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) Jury selection is scheduled to get underway in the trial of two men charged with trying to kill a Wyandotte County deputy. Deputy Scott Wood was shot seven times last March when three armed men tried to rob a convenience store where he had stopped after work. The Kansas City Star reports jury selection is scheduled to begin Monday in the trial of 25-year-old Dyron M. King, and 36-year-old Cecil D. The Kansas Highway Patrol responded to an injury accident early Saturday morning on K18. A 2004 GMC Sierra driven by Brandon Tucker (28) of Fort Riley was travelling westbound on K18 when the vehicle left the roadway near mile post 187 for an unknown reason. The vehicle then entered the median and struck a culvert and overturned, eventually landing on its wheels. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Tucker was not wearing his seat belt when the accident occurred , and he was transported to Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan with an unknown injury.
