A week long interview process and four candidates later, USD 383 looks to be set to name Marvin Wade its new superintendent. Wade’s hire is contingent on an official vote to be held later this afternoon. Wade, the third candidate to be announced in last weeks search, currently serves as superintendent of the Marshalltown Community School District in Iowa. The Iowa district announced on its website that Wade has announced his resignation, effective June 30th. The series with Arizona’s Wildcats begins with a game in Manhattan in 2024, while the series will shift to Tucson in 2025. Riley County Police are currently investigating an apparent self-inflicted gunshot death in NE Manhattan. Public Information Officer Mat Droge has confirmed that the surrounding community is not in any danger and the matter is not a public safety concern. No further information about the incident was made available by the RCPD.

A Manhattan woman is among winners in last week’s historic Powerball drawing. The unidentified woman has claimed a $50,000 cash prize from the January 13th Powerball drawing and has asked that the Lottery keep her identity a secret. The woman matched four of the first five Powerball numbers and the Powerball on a $10 Quick Pick ticket. The numbers that earned her windfall –  04-08-19-34-52 and Powerball 10. In addition, a Garden City man claimed a $1 million Powerball cash prize Wednesday morning and has requested that his identity also remain anonymous.

The Wamego City Commission has approved several board appointments. At Tuesday’s meeting, City Manager Merl Page said Bruce Butler agreed to be reappointed to the Board of Zoning Appeals for another 3-year term, which expires in February 2019. Page announced that Roxanne Linnebur applied for the Housing Authority Board. Both appointments were approved unanimously. The Wamego City Commission will be participating in several local events. At Tuesday’s meeting, City Manager Merl Page reminded the Commission they have participated in the Diamonds and Denim Fundraiser for several years by both sponsoring and donating. The Committee requested the same participation as last year, which was a $1,000 donation and several pool passes. Diamonds and Denim is a Wamego Hospital Foundation event, and all the proceeds go to support equipment purchases for the Hospital. A preliminary hearing has been set for a 38-year-old Manhattan man facing several charges following a January sixth search in Wamego. Brian Duzan’s preliminary hearing will be January 28th in Pottawatomie County District Court. Duzan was taken into custody after a nine hour search January sixth, with police finding him in the ceiling at All American Garage Doors and Windows at 503 Lincoln, where the burglary occurred. His charges include aggravated burglary, possession of methamphetamine, and misdemeanor theft charges.
