As KMAN reported this past weekend, officers with the Riley County Police Department arrested a Manhattan man on multiple drug related offenses with a bond of $71,000. James Schuyler, 30, was taken into custody at approximately 12:30 AM Saturday while in the 900 block of North 3rd Street. More than 20 charges are listed, including the drug-related counts and some weapons violations. Unemployment numbers are up just a little in the Manhattan area, with 3.9 percent reported in the Manhattan metro area including Riley and Pottawatomie Counties. That’s up from May’s 2.9 percent, but the same as last year at the same time. Manhattan with Junction City’s micropolitan area was also up at 4.4 percent compared to 3.3 in May. The Junction City/Geary County micro area had a 6.6 unemployment rate last month. Area counties also showed increases with 3.9 percent in Riley County, up a percentage point. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A new attorney has been appointed to represent a Kansas woman appealing her conviction for killing two people. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports a Shawnee County judge has appointed Adam D. Stolte, an Olathe attorney, to take over Dana Lynn Chandler’s appeal. Stolte is the sixth appellate attorney to represent Chandler, now 56. Chandler is appealing a 2012 conviction when she was found guilty of the 2002 deaths of her former husband 47-year-old Mike Sisco, and his fiancee, 53-year-old Karen Harkness. The two were fatally shot in Harkness’ home in southwest Topeka. She was sentenced in August 2012…

SALINA — A woman accused of attempting to hide a gun used to kill a Salina teen has been sentenced to probation. The Salina Journal reports that 22-year-old Mexico citizen Azucena Garcia-Ferniza was sentenced to a year and a half of probation but will remain in custody while her immigration status is reviewed. She was convicted earlier of charges accusing her of hiding a gun belonging to her boyfriend, Macio D. Palacio Jr., after Palacio had been taken into custody for the murder of 17-year-old Allie Saum. Early Saturday morning, Riley County Police arrested 30-year-old James Henry Schuyler of Manhattan on multiple counts of possession, distribution, and manufacturing opiates and stimulants. Schuyler  was taken into custody in the 900 block of N. 3rd Street. Schuyler was also charged with criminal use of weapons and possession of firearms. At the time of this report Schuyler was confined at Riley county jail with bond set at $71,000.

TOPEKA — A federal judge has told Kansas that for three more years he will monitor its compliance with the U.S. Supreme Court’s historic decision legalizing gay marriage across the nation. U.S. District Judge Daniel Crabtree issued a permanent order Friday barring the state from treating same-sex couples differently than opposite-sex couples in allowing them to marry or extending the benefits of marriage to them. He ruled in lawsuit filed in 2014 against the state’s health and revenue departments. The Department of Revenue also issues driver’s licenses. The U.S. Supreme Court issued its decision last year. Officers with the Riley County Police Department made an arrest for possession of stolen property in the 800 block of Vattier Street in Manhattan Thursday at approximately 1:30 PM following a traffic stop. Based on information available at the time of the stop and out of an abundance of caution, officers performed a “high risk traffic stop,” meaning police called the driver and occupants out of the car instead of approaching the vehicle. Emergency crews to were called to the Wildcat Marina at Tuttle Creek Lake Thursday as a precaution. The call came in shortly after 9 a.m. of two boats capsizing, with several emergency crews responding including the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Riley County EMS, Kansas Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, Tuttle Creek State Park, and Manhattan and Blue Township Fire Departments. All boaters and coaches were out of the water by the time crews arrived. The boaters were of the Manhattan Junior Crew, an independent club for rowers outside Manhattan High School and is composed of high school-aged rowers.
