TOPEKA — The Kansas Legislature’s top Democrats are predicting that Republican lawmakers will try to extend a new law for funding public schools that’s been criticized by many educators. Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley of Topeka and House Minority Leader Tom Burroughs of Kansas City said Sunday that they believe the Legislature’s GOP majorities won’t be able to pass another school funding law this year. A Manhattan man faces charges following an incident on Priboth Road south of Manhattan Saturday morning. Arthur Vincent Corgill III, 23, of the 1800 block of Priboth Road, was taken into custody at 11:30 a.m. on charges of aggravated assault, criminal discharge of a firearm, and criminal damage to property. His bond was set at $16,000. Riley County Police Public Information Officer Matthew Droge told KMAN earlier Saturday morning there were no injuries, law enforcement was able to avoid using force, and there was no danger to the surrounding community as of 9:55 a.m. Saturday. NORMAN, Okla. (AP)– Buddy Hield and No. 2 Oklahoma bounced back from their difficult loss to Kansas with an impressive shooting performance against Kansas State. The Kansas Court of Appeals has reversed and remanded with directions in a two year old Geary County case. The STATE OF KANSAS v. LOAN TRAN case involves  Tran appealing the district court’s denial of her oral motion to withdraw her plea. Tran argues the district court erred by failing to inquire further concerning an alleged conflict of interest between Tran and her defense counsel. On January 30, 2014, the State charged Tran with one count of possession of methamphetamine and two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia. TOPEKA — A Shawnee County judge quickly dismissed a civil action to remove a Topeka city councilman charged with child abuse from the council. But prosecutors say they will refile the action later. In a hearing Friday, Judge Franklin Theis dismissed the ouster effort against Jonathan Robert Schumm. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports the district attorney’s office sought the dismissal earlier in the day. But prosecutors said they would refile the civil action after the criminal case against Schumm is resolved.
