The Kansas Department of Agriculture will lead an emergency preparedness exercise, Afterburn, Dec. 19–22, in Manhattan to practice the state’s response plan to a foreign animal disease event.    The four-day functional exercise, which will be based out of KDA headquarters in Manhattan, Kan., will enable KDA and its partners in other state agencies, federal and local government, industry, university and six other states to practice the state’s foreign animal disease response plan. A February 14th jury trial has been set for a Manhattan man facing three counts of aggravated criminal sodomy.Jase Stanton’s case continues to get delayed, with the original case occurring in June of 2015–and trial rescheduled at least a couple of times. A motions hearing was held early this year (2016) with a trial then set for April–Stanton was again set for trial this past week but the case was delayed with a status hearing held earlier this week. Junction City Police are investigating two separate deaths the past few days within a block of each other. Early Tuesday morning Officers responded to the 500 block of West Spruce Street in reference to an injured subject. Upon arrival shortly before 12:30 a.m., officers located a 22-year-old male subject with critical injuries. The subject was transported to Geary Community Hospital where he later died. An autopsy has been scheduled and the case is under investigation. At this time no foul play is suspected. Officers with the Riley County Police Department filed a report for forgery in the 200 block of Tuttle Creek Blvd. on Monday afternoon shortly after noon. Officers listed Community First National Bank as a victim when a suspect altered a check’s name and total amount. The total loss associated with this crime was approximately $3960. Officers also filed a report for aggravated burglary in the 1500 block of Pierre St. on Monday evening at approximately 5:30 PM, though the crime was reported to have occurred on Saturday. A fire in Manhattan Monday afternoon resulted in about $75,000 in damage to a two-story structure. At 2:45 p.m., the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to the blaze at 422 Vattier and upon arrival crews found a two-story residential structure with smoke and fire showing. Crews entered the structure and quickly extinguished the fire. The fire reached a second alarm before it was contained within 30 minutes with a total of 21 firefighters responding on 6 fire apparatus. Riley County commissioners agreed to renew its contract with a Topeka lobbying firm Monday. Commissioners agreed 3-0 to again use the services of The Carter Group, Inc. The agreement will run through Dec. 31 of next year and will cost the county $2,000 per month. County Counselor Clancy Holeman told the commission the firm gives the county an advantage in maintaining key relationships in the state legislature. “The only really good way to develop that is on site, in my opinion,” Holeman said. About 125 soldiers from the 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, are set to redeploy to Fort Riley this week. A redeployment ceremony is scheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday to allow friends, family and the local community to welcome these soldiers home. The ceremony will take place in building 1986 on Camp Funston. WICHITA — A southern Kansas woman who admittedly stole more than $570,000 from her former employer has been ordered to spend three years in prison. A Sedgwick County judge on Monday sentenced 46-year-old Jeannette Block of Wichita. She had pleaded guilty in October to one count of felony theft. Authorities say Block worked for Pizza Hut of Southeast Kansas Inc. as an accountant and controller for 15 years. Prosecutors say Block’s thefts took place over the last five years of her employment, ending in 2014. The district attorney’s office says in a statement that Block asked the judge to grant her…
