After several months of discussion, the Riley County Law Board came to an agreement on a budget for the Riley County Police Department. The budget amounts to about $20,291,055.19, which is nearly 2.7 percent over last year’s. Included are additions for court security, a mental health designated employee, and a dispatcher. Court security created considerable discussion with a presentation by Riley County Court Chief Judge Meryl Wilson at the beginning of the meeting. The Riley County Commission Chambers filled up towards the end of the board’s meeting with various farmers and other residents of the more rural north half of the county Monday morning. They were there to hear more about the deteriorating Fancy Creek Bridge on Fancy Creek Road. It’s a bridge important to residents in the area — especially for farmers who have land on either side of the creek. AUGUSTA — Authorities say two people have been wounded at a high school graduation ceremony in southern Kansas after a man with a concealed weapon permit adjusted a sock he had stuffed a pistol into. Augusta Police Chief Tyler Brewer said Sunday afternoon that the shooting was accidental and described it as a “knucklehead situation.” The bullet went through the man’s foot and traveled about another 50 feet before striking a woman in her calf. Jonathon Graham, 19, of Leonardville, Kansas was arrested on May 14, 2016 at approximately 6:55 PM on a warrant for the offense of electronic solicitation which is associated with an investigation from 2015. The Junction City Police Department is investigating the death of an unidentified female Sunday afternoon. At about 3:11 p.m. Sunday, officers were dispatched to the Super 8 hotel at 1133 South Washington Street, room 217 to check the welfare of the occupant. Upon the arrival of the responding officers a 36-year old woman was located in the room. It is believed the death was not criminal in nature but a complete investigation is being conducted. An autopsy is scheduled for today.

AUGUSTA — Two people have been shot and wounded at a high school graduation ceremony in southern Kansas. The Wichita Eagle reports that the Butler County Sheriff’s Office says the shooting happened around 2 p.m. Sunday at the Augusta High School ceremony. An ambulance took one victim to a Wichita hospital, while the second victim was transported in a private vehicle. Augusta is about 20 miles east of Wichita. No other information was immediately available. The sheriff’s office directed The Associated Press to the Augusta Police Department, which was planning a briefing later Sunday.

A dust storm in Geary county kept first responders busy on Friday afternoon. An accident involving seven different vehicles was triggered by the dust blowing across I-70 westbound near mile marker 293. A chain reaction started when Tanner Hassel, 21, of Leoti, was driving westbound in a 2008 Chevy Silverado and struck 18-year old Alejandro Espinoza, of Abilene, due to decreased visibility. This caused a chain reaction sending two people to the hospital. David Geist, 54, of Hoxie, was transported to Geary Community Hospital. TOPEKA — State agencies, cities and counties in Kansas will not be allowed to bar workers from carrying concealed guns while performing duties outside their offices, starting in July. Republican Gov. Sam Brownback signed a gun-rights bill this week that includes the provision affecting government workers. Agencies still could limit the carrying of concealed weapons in public buildings. The measure also creates an exception to a state law requiring students to be expelled if they bring weapons to public schools so that school groups can have organized activities involving air guns, such as BB rifles. TOPEKA — A measure approved by Republican Gov. Sam Brownback reduces some penalties for marijuana possession. The measure approved Friday reduces the penalty for first-time marijuana possession, which can now result in up to a year in jail, to no more than six months. The penalty for a second offense would be reduced from a low-level felony to a sentence of up to a year in jail. Subsequent offences could result in 10 to 42 months in prison, which is the current punishment for a second possession offense.
