NEWTON, Kan. (AP) The Newton City Commission has voted to fire the city manager, effective immediately. The Hutchinson News reports the vote Tuesday was 3-2 to fire City Manager Randy Riggs, who had held the position since March 2008. The city hasn’t said why Riggs was fired other than a desire by the commission to pursue a different direction in management of the community. The city says in a news release that Rigs will receive more than $215,000 upon departure, including severance of roughly $147,000 and health insurance benefits, unused vacation and unused sick leave. The City of Manhattan wants to know your thoughts on city communication efforts. They’ve launched an online survey to gauge communication effectiveness. The survey is available through June 3. Once the results are in, city administration will use them to develop a strategic communication plan.

On May 10, 2016 at approximately 3:25 PM police arrested Julie Kenfield, 44, of Leonardville, Kansas while in the 100 block of Courthouse Plaza in Manhattan. Officers arrested Kenfield on a warrant for the offense of failure to appear which originated in Ness County, Kansas. This warrant had “no bond” and caused Kenfield to be confined at the Riley County Jail at the time of this report. Updated 10 a.m. 5/11/2016 Blue Township Fire Department responded to a rollover accident at approximately 10:38 p.m. on Wednesday evening at the intersection of Highway 13 and Carnahan Creek Road in Pottawatomie County. Initial reports indicate there was an entrapment, and the Pottawatomie County Sheriff Greg Riat confirmed with KMAN that the three passengers of the vehicle were all taken to hospitals, with one passenger being life-flighted.

Members of the community voiced their desires before city commissioner’s Tuesday night, as they discussed moving ahead with framework for a hybrid inspection option. The option would consist of external inspections that can trigger interior expectations should violations go unresolved. Under the hybrid plan, property owners would be required to register with the city on a yearly basis. The possibility of an annual fee exists, should the commission choose to implement one.…

City and university officials have announced that Orion Integrated Biosciences, Larchmont, New York, has opened a new office in Manhattan to work more closely with Kansas State University scientists and capitalize on the future opening of the National Bio and Agro-defense Facility, or NBAF.
