The commanding general of Fort Riley, Maj. Gen. Wayne W. Grigsby, was suspended Friday afternoon. Fort Riley spokesperson Kimeisha McCullum told KMAN no reason was given for the suspension and the matter is pending investigation. The order came from the Pentagon. The suspension is effective immediately with no indication on when the suspension may be lifted. It comes days after Patrick Murphy — a top military official and Army undersecretary — visited the facility on Tuesday. A St. George man has died from injuries suffered in an accident on Kimball Avenue in Manhattan on Sept. 12, according to newly released information from the Riley County Police Department. Lawrence C. Rogers, Jr., 52, was the driver of van in a head-on collision with a passenger car on Kimball, just east of the Manhattan Fire Department Headquarters on the intersection of Kimball and Denison. The area was shut down for much of the afternoon and both he and the driver of the passenger car, 52-year-old Lisa Curtright of Manhattan, required Life Star helicopter transportation to hospitals out of Manhattan…

The Kansas State University Student Union will extend its hours beginning this Sunday. The Union Governing Board voted recently to keep the lights on and doors open for 24 hours from Sunday-Thursday through the school year. Hours for food, retail and office space remain the same. Students can enter the Union via Bosco Plaza and the south entrance after hours. The sky-walk will remain closed after 10 pm, however. The University reduced study hours at Hale Library this semester as a result of spring funding cuts.

TOPEKA — Kansas’ attorney general has released a document showing that the U.S. Department of Defense spent nearly $26,000 surveying potential sites last year for housing terror suspects now held in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Republican Attorney General Derek Schmidt says he’s concerned the federal agency may have violated a prohibition from Congress on spending federal money to move the prisoners to U.S. soil. Fort Leavenworth, an Army base in Kansas, was among the sites surveyed. Local and state officials strongly oppose moving detainees there. LARNED — State officials say the warden at the Kansas Department of Corrections mental health facility in Larned has left the position, but offered no details. The Hutchinson News reports Wednesday was the last day Douglas Waddington led the Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility. The center is different from Larned State Hospital, which is on the same campus. Kansas Department of Corrections spokesman Adam Pfannenstiel declined to comment about the nature of Waddington’s departure, citing policy not to speak about personnel matters. TOPEKA — The University of Kansas says Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little plans to step down from the position in the summer of 2017. The university issued a statement Thursday. Gray-Little has been chancellor of the state’s largest university since August 2009. Gray-Little said in a statement that with major initiatives at the university nearing completion, it’s an ideal time for her to leave its top administrative job. She also said that announcing her departure now will help the university and the Kansas Board of Regents find a replacement without having to name an interim chancellor for a smoother transition. Riley County commissioners approved an agreement to provide funds necessary for the Riley County Police Department to continue its plans to self-fund its workers’ compensation insurance policy Thursday. The agreement is similar to one the Manhattan City Commission signed earlier this week. For RCPD’s process to be successful, the State of Kansas requires that the City of Manhattan and Riley County execute a “Guaranty Agreement.” If RCPD is unable to pay any workers compensation claims due to a lack of funds, the City and County will make up the difference by their own “excess” contributions to those claims. Officers with the Riley County Police Department filed a report for the offense of burglary to a vehicle in the 1400 Cambridge Place in Manhattan on September 21, 2016 at approximately 9:20 AM. This crime is likely to have occurred during the overnight hours prior. Police listed Tamara Matagi, 21, of Manhattan as the victim after a Playstation 3 with wireless controllers, athletic shoes, a television, and jewelry were removed from her vehicle. Two Pottawatomie county teenagers appeared in court earlier this week for their role in an armed robbery case. 18-year-old Alec Pierson waived his preliminary hearing and is set for arraignment next month. James Krauz, 19, was continued until October 25. The two were arrested in May after robbing the Red Raider Express on April 29 of this year. In a separate case, 18-year-old Corian Joseph pleaded guilty to an amended charge of unlawful sexual relations from an August incident. He will be sentenced on October 20.
