A prominent Manhattan businessman and former K-State back-up quarterback Zachary Burton was in the Riley County District Courthouse for a status hearing Tuesday afternoon. Burton, who owns Fieldhouse Development, Inc., was arrested on four counts of unlawful sexual relations with a female student on June 7. Burton, 38, will return to court Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. for a preliminary hearing in front of Judge William Malcolm. The Kaw Valley Rodeo Association’s 10th annual Tough Enough to Wear Pink Rodeo will be at 8 p.m. Friday, July 22, at Wells Arena in Manhattan’s CiCo Park. The event honors cancer survivors and raises awareness and funds for Kansas State University’s Johnson Cancer Research Center. WICHITA — A Dodge City woman has been sentenced to nearly 22 years in prison for creating a video of herself engaged in a sex act with a child under 5 years old and uploading it to the internet. The sentence was handed down Monday for 25-year-old Ashley Marie Kelly, who pleaded guilty in March to one count of producing child pornography. She admitted using a smartphone to record the sex act and posting it to her Google Drive account. Google discovered it and notified the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

TOPEKA — The former Kansas transportation secretary will be a regional director for a John Deere construction equipment dealer. The Wichita Eagle reports that Mike King has joined Murphy Tractor & Equipment Co. Republican Gov. Sam Brownback’s office announced King’s departure last month. King had worked in the construction industry for more than three decades and was owner of a McPherson company when Brownback named him transportation secretary in March 2012. Use of force was a topic at Monday’s Riley County Law Board meeting, with a last minute presentation at the request of law board member Karen McCulloh, who asked for the information the end of last week. Many annual events say they are bigger and better every year, but with the 41st Annual Kaw Valley Rodeo in Manhattan, it’s not just lip service. “We’re up about 100 more contestants than last year,” said Kaw Valley Rodeo Association representative Steve Frazier during Monday morning’s Riley County Commission meeting. WICHITA — What was originally planned as a protest march turned into a barbecue in which Wichita police and a diverse group of residents broke bread together. The Wichita Eagle reports that organizers of the protest met with Police Chief Gordon Ramsay for several hours, ending with an agreement for the barbecue, which took place Sunday at McAdams Park. Several Wichita police officers took part. The goal was to open lines of communication and build trust between police and the communities they serve. The crowd at the barbecue included people who were white, black and Hispanic.

COPELAND — Five people are injured after a tractor-trailer struck an all-terrain vehicle in western Kansas. The Garden City Telegram reports that the accident happened Saturday night at the intersection of U.S. 56 and a county road near Copeland. The Kansas Highway Patrol says 35-year-old Andrew Dean Yost of Copeland tried to make a left turn and was struck by a 2015 semi driven by William Bartz of Portales, Florida, who was trying to pass the ATV on the left.
